Peter Carroll is author of TheOdyssey of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade:Americans inthe Spanish Civil War( 1950). Little is known about the New Hampshire brigade members. Two attended Dartmouth College. Joseph Dallet was a concert pianist and editor of The Dartmouth before going to Spain, where he was killed.

State Senator Burt Cohen from New Castle, New Hampshire, proposed a plaque in their honor last year. "I don't know what kind of ideology these guys had," he said. "What is important is what they are. The world was not awake to the evils of fascism and Nazism until these guys put their lives on the line."

The plaque was dedicated in the statehouse Hall of Flags. It is the third memorial in the United States honoring the brigade. Enjoy your summer!
