Read me first! This month I got several inputs from classmates. But not enough even yet. E-mail is easy: mcgrutherk@aol.com. Or jot me a note at the address below. It's a delight to hear from any and all of you at any time by any means! Here is some of what I have picked up. Richard Joseph is on leave from Emory University through this summer as a senior fellow of the U.S. Institute on Peace in Washington, D.C. He is in the process of writing a book on political renewal and political conflict in Africa since 1989. Richard qualifies as an authority on that topic, having had direct personal experiences in several African countries while he was a fellow with the Carter Center in Atlanta. Richard recently gave a talk in Washington on the topic of "Beyond Crisis and Disorder: Accelerating Reform and Restructuring in Africa."

John McKissock writes that while Dartmouth was a formative experience, it has been remote from the road he has followed. But it was good to hear about that road, and, he adds, he could not have traveled it without a liberal arts education. After Dartmouth John served in the Peace Corps and then with the Army Military Assistance and Advisory Group to Iran. He then did graduate work at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Rather than parlay that resume into the Foreign Service he then went to work in the steel industry until 1984. Ultimately John wound up with Penn State University's management development programs and services, which specializes in management and executive development programs delivered "to go" around the world. Currently John is teaching and developing international business, which frequently takes him to the Middle East and Latin America. John and wife Pat have two sons, John Patrick and Phillip, both recent college graduates just starting to make their way. Being a student of the Middle East, John commented about how appalled he is at "the abject failure of American policy in the Middle East. The current presidents prolonged neglect and lassitude, broken only by the tragedies of September 11, when events were already out of control, have been painful to observe. We can only mourn for the lost opportunities. Fortunately, the United States has always shown itself to be amazingly resilient, and I am confident that we shall overcome this failure of leadership as well as the enemies of freedom." Amen, John, certainly to that closing line.

Dick Jones and his English friend Chloe met Phil Edgerton and wife Gayle in London recently for dinner, even though Phil lives In nearby Santa Fe. In the past year or so Dick has started his own consulting company specializing in R&D of pharmaceutical products particularly in animal studies and chemistry manufacturing. His primary customer focus is on smaller companies needing expertise in developing products. His 30 years of experience in the field is paying off! Dick is reachable at new e-mail address: valdours@aol.com. Write now!
