Just received a short note from Jerry Tallmer—an event rarer than the return of Halley's Comet—and I hasten to share it with you. "On November 29,1990, Fran Martin and I were married by Judge Bobby Braunstein in the Jockey Club of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York City, as Gerald and Betty Ford were dining a few tables away." 1990? (Remember, this is from a guy in fast-news business!) Fran is a "Boston-born New Yorker, former Spanish dancer, publicity woman, and beauty," and, one might infer, an understanding and patient lady. Congratulations to both of you, and a warm welcome, Fran, into Jerry's circle of Dartmouth friends.
Wouldn't want you to think I am without blemish in the timely-message-delivery department. Reviewing some of your 1990-91 questionnaires recently I found this note appended to Lindy Di Fabio's: "If Bixby,Bartholomew, and Garwick are there [50th Reunion], tell them to raise a few for me. And if you're still in touch with Mike de Sherbinin, give him my best." Messages herewith delivered, Lindy, if you can hear me up there in the Italian section of Heaven. You were in our thoughts at the 50th.
Wally Meckes comments on an "unexpected dividend" of the 50th Reunion: "I had a lot of very interesting talks with many '42s whom I did not have a chance to know in much depth during college days because our paths didn't cross much. Their ideas and comments were most interesting and reflected great credit on them and on the value of a liberal arts education." As one who, at the 50th, benefited from that same "dividend," Wally, I'm assuming we were not alone in that experience.
When Bob and Becky Rogers hear the call of spring they migrate from Lexington, N.C., to "Rogers' Cottage" in Ludington, Mich. This fall, when they headed back home, they opted for the scenic route: "Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, Yellowstone, Salt Lake City, and the other canyons." After one visit to S.L.C. some years ago I can vouch for the fact that the streets are (were) very clean and the people very friendly, but I can't say that it's among the top ten cities I'm anxious to revisit. Those first three places, on the other hand, are outstanding experiences.
Friends of Dan and Joellen Hagge know that, sadly, Dan has been confined to their home (Hazelhurst, Wis.) under 24-hour care for more than two years. In a recent note Joellen says Dan is "much the same," though during the summer they did take him out on a boat a couple of times. She reports that her own 40th reunion at Wellesley was "great."
In the August newsletter many of you read Lipp's report of the death of Bynum Hinton on May 30. An obituary will appear in a later issue of the DAM.
