With the news pouring in, I ask myself whether to report chronologically, alphabetically or randomly. How about quickly, you say. Well, first things, first.
By presidential decree of Margaret Marder, I must report that mini-reunions will be happening across the United States this June. Stay alert for news about these sports-related events happening in your city, or at least somewhere nearby. Our very own Lucy Harvey will be spearheading this effort. No word whether Lucy will be attending every reunion.
The vote is in (yes, a single vote—mine): Chronologically. First with news was Manus Clancy, who sent greetings from N.Y.C. Certainly many of you remember the highly popular sports radio show Manus and I hosted on WDCR. Clearly, this show spawned most of sports radio as we know it today (Mike and the Mad Dog, Jim Rome, Farrell on the Bench, ESPN). Oddly, Manus appears to have moved beyond his radio background, as he did not mention one iota of our broadcast days. Seems he's busy with his five kids (Joseph, 14; Manus III, 7; Matthew, 1; and Teresa and Caroline, 5) and wife Margaret. The Clancy clan lives in Bronxville, New York. Manus mentioned he keeps in touch with Paul Adkins, Eric Lombardi, Max Martinez and Steve Haeckel. No word from these guys whether they enjoy Manus keeping in touch with them.
Next up with news was Eric Libre, whom it seems has been following me from D.C. to Michigan to the mid-Atlantic area. Eric lives in Maryland with his wife, Elisa DeAngelis, and kids Christina (7), Michael (6) and Matthew (4), and works at Fairfax Hospital doing a mix of patient care, teaching and clinical research. Of particular importance, however, is his continued commitment to beer pong. Eric has hosted an annual beer pong/barbeque for the past several summers with his fellow Delta Psi brothers (including Mark Allen), other Dartmouth fans and assorted neighborhood degenerates. Though not specifically mentioned, I'm sure Eric would welcome all comers. BYOP.
How about the coincidence of a note from Jay Caldwell? Who can forget that jay was the only caller to stump the hosts of the Manus/MacManus show during the sports trivia segment? Who doesn't love obscure lacrosse trivia? Jay is still in upstate New York and loving all the available outdoor activities—fishing, skiing, motorcycling and rock climbing. (No mention of snow shoveling.) Jay and wife Leah are the proud parents of sons Nathan (5) and Bennett (3), who, given their funny, sweet, smart and handsome attributes, must have more genes from their mom. Jay and his family are still running the Caldwell Gallery outside Syracuse, so if you want some fine art, stop by and say hello. Thanks for the note, Jay!
Speaking of mini-reunions, Tim Coughlin took matters into his own hands and organized one at the Dartmouth-UNH hockey game this past winter.Tim,Mark Goggin, Peter Anastos, Chip Kuzborski and Mike Reilly were on hand to watch UNH assistant coach Scott Borek. Though the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the post-game activity continued well into the evening/next day.Tim has recently been elected president of the New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association and, as a Republican, expects an interesting challenge with this mostly Democratic group.Tim,consider your mention here as my literary chug.
As the dreaded word count approaches, I only have time to mention that Ron denBroeder has.. .well, if he didn't have such a long name, you'd find out. Next column. Happy summer!
