At this writing, just days before the close of 2003, news comes of James Nachtwey's having suffered shrapnel wounds on December 10, when a grenade was thrown into the Humvee in which he and Time correspondent Michael Weisskopf were traveling with two soldiers in Baghdad, Iraq. Weisskopf lost his hand in the explosion when he tried to throw the grenade from the vehicle, an act the Army credits with saving the lives of all four men. The victims were airlifted to a hospital in Germany, then state- side, and Jim is now recuperating at home in New York. We wish him, and the others injured, a speedy recovery.

The Boston Globe (and several other media) reported that Ed "Chuck" Haldeman has taken on a daunting challenge, having moved up in November 2003 from investment chief to CEO at Putnam Investments in the wake of fraud charges against the company. He moved quickly and decisively to get some of the legal problems behind the fifth largest U.S. fund manager, and those who have followed Ed's work elsewhere are convinced that if anyone can turn things around there, he's the right guy.

In the category of somewhat stale news (sorry, Tom, just got it!), Tom Peisch was named managing partner of the Wellesley, Massachusetts, firm of which he was a founder, Conn Kavanaugh Rosenthal Peisch & Ford. Belated congrats, Tom.

I recently received a press release issued by Gov. Pataki's office announcing that Trip Dorkey has donned another hat, having been named by Pataki in May 2003 as chairman of the Hudson River Park Trust. The trust is the public benefit corporation charged with designing, building and operating the 5-mile-long park running from Battery Place to 59th Street on Manhattans West Side. Restoration and development of the 300,000-square-foot Pier 57 is the current hot project. Build it, Trip, and they will come.

The Newtown, Connecticut, Bee recently carried a nice human interest piece on Mark Korotash. Mark has been practicing law with partner/fraternity brother Jim Mulvey '69 in Danbury since 1976, and is active in civic affairs in Newtown.

Faithful field reporter Willy Wilson (already nominated by Scott and me as our successor) writes: "Not reported in The Globe (or anywhere else for that matter) was a breakfast meeting of influential '70s Star Johnson, Wayne Osmond, Tom Peisch and me, on Saturday morning before the Harvard game. Our agenda, aside from getting to the stadium early for prime tailgate position, was to share thoughts on how to gain some class momentum, which we hope is sustainable, going into our 35th reunion year. The meeting was a great prelude to an incredible Dartmouth victory on the gridiron."

And speaking of reunion, two requests from your class executive committee: Please share with any of us your ideas for reunion events or other class initiatives you'd favor, and lets not forget to send in those class dues. They help fund reunion and, more immediately, cover the cost of subscriptions to the alumni mag.

Keep in touch.
