Copious news from around the globe. Rick Reno e-mailed: "Skye and I have left Utila after almost nine years. I'm taking over the marine department, and Skye's re-establishing Salty Dog Video Productions at a beautiful place called Lalati Resort and Spa. We're on Beqa Island in the Fiji Islands. For those of you who have never been here, it is absolutely magical in its beauty and we've truly found paradise." After reading this from Rick, I nearly bagged the Notes to roadtrip to Fiji. You may wish I had.
Got a welcome e-mail from Barbara Ross. "New job after 12 years freelancing from home! I'm senior writer for the South Florida Water Management District, which oversees Everglades restoration and the regions water resources. I'm now somewhat of an expert on phosphorus threats to Everglades National Park, salinity levels in Florida Bay, invasive exotic plants, etc. The job is a great match to my science writing background, so it's been a wonderful transition back to office life. Looking forward to catching up at reunion." We'll be there!
In the "brotherly love" department, Denny Cullen '72 sent a note that his brother, Kevin Cullen, was recently named director of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center. The University of Maryland, which is currently home to the largest organ transplant and trauma programs in the country, has made a strategic decision to expand its program in oncology, and asked Kevin to lead that effort. Kevin has spent the last 15 years with the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown as assistant director and acting director. Kevin is married to Lisa Brown. They live in the D.C. area with their year-old son, Philip. Thanks, Denny!
Keeping it in the family, I got a note from '53 class secretary Mark Smoller: "I am enclosing some information regarding my son, Bruce R. Smoller. He was appointed chairman of the pathology department at the University of Arkansas Medical School, is the president of the American Society of Dermatopathology, editor of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, has published between 250 to 300 papers, written five books and about 30 chapters in other books. There are many other entries in his huge resume, but these are some highlights. He is married to a Dartmouth alumna, Laura Ackerman Smoller '81. Please excuse the bragging!" No brag, just fact, Mark!
I received several postings from the newswire. Peter McDonnell III, M.D., is the William Holland Wilmer Professor of Opthalmology and director of the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He's been the director of the Wilmer Eye Institute since July 2003, having previously served four years as the Irving H. Leopold Professor and chair of the department of opthalmology at the University of California-Irvine. Kudos, Peter!
