As June 2004 fast approaches, our classmates seem to have one common thought predominantly on their mind. From the hot and heavy e-mail chatter that our agents have picked up on the Internet it appears that a selective peek into the minds of most Dartmouth 84 minds would reveal something strangely resembling a cocktail glass/outdoor grill superimposed on the number "20"!
Yes, though we have been to Dartmouth, drank in basements with our old comrades, had a dinner that couldn't be beat, danced to throwback music from one of our favorite local bands and talked about the intervening 19 years until we couldn't think...of anything else to say, there appears to be unfinished business when it comes to celebrating our 20th reunion!
Well, June has arrived and with it we will finally, or by the time we go to print, have finally scratched our collective 20th reunion itch.
At no less than nine locations 'round the girdled earth our classmates are coming together to mark the event! Our most recent president emeritus, Molly Wender, shares that, "Since reunion, I have been busy with Max (10) and Sam (7), and their baseball and football. Mom has been learning some new moves as well, qigong and tai chi, which are relaxing and have great potential to increase health and well being." And in addition to this busy schedule, she is planning our Atlanta chapters reunion to be a pool party this early August. Turning over the reins of class leadership hasn't slowed her down one bit.
Not to be upstaged, Tom Callahan is planning another throwback party. His own description says it all, I think: "We are having Webster Avenue theme where we play music very loud from speakers turned out the windows, play beer pong on the lawn and have some sort of mysterious punch mixed in a trash can." Sounds like one of those nights we look back on and reminisce. This gala bash will be on June 5, so they may already be talking about how little of it they remember by the time you're reading this column.
Closer to the scene of the crime, as it were, in Hanover David Hooke is opening the family cabin at Mt. Moosilauke for a reenactment of freshmen trip shenanigans. Save the dates July 23-25!
So there you have it. A once-in-a-lifetime, never-to-be-repeated globe-spanning event coming to your neighborhood on the occasion of our own 20th reunion. From cocktails in New York City to beer bashes in Washington, D.C.; wine tasting in Sonoma County, California, to green eggs and ham in the DOC Lodge on Mt. Moosilauke; mud bowl and volleyball mosh pit at Lucia Jackson's to pool parties on Atlanta with Molly. It'll be great to choose your own flavor and get together with classmates wherever you may be.
Mary and I expect details from all events for a wrap-up report later in the year. Geoff Berlin has done a fantastic job of creating a class Web site and all the details you need to join in the fun are there at www.dartmouth84.org. He even kept the riddle of the password simple enough so that I could guess it. If you're planning an event or just looking to attend one in your area, check this site for the details and instructions you need. The international crowd is in full swing too, so don't be left out.
As always, Mary and I are eager to hear about you and the rest of our classmates. Drop us a quick line at j imlawbia@aol.com or fabio@chop. edu. Have a great start to your summer, everyone, after all, you made it through 20 years after Dartmouth College!
