Hail fellow '72s, well met!

I sincerely hope your summer has gone well and that all are rested, happy and healthy!

As you read this a new crop of Big Greeners

has settled into our College. The qualifications and breadth of experience these young people bring to our community are truly amazing. I am blessed to be among them; they keep me young and inquisitive. Word has reached me at least two among you have contributed to this talent pool. Julie, Shel Prentices daughter, and Andrew, son of classmate Tom Preacher, are proud members of the class of 2009.

Tom has been practicing law for 25 years in the lowa Quad Cities, a metropolitan area that straddles the Mississippi River on the Iowa-Illinois border. For the past 20 years he's been a sole practitioner, now focusing on criminal law. Tom says, "There's not a lot of money in it, but on the other hand it's the only area of the law where it's not uncommon to have a constitutional issue pop up out of the blue, which makes it more interesting to me than other specialties." Tom's wife, Teri, works in the travel industry, and his other son, Charlie, is a senior in high school. Class of 2010, Tom? Great to hear from you; keep in touch! And other 2009 parents—please let us know!

The Squam mini-reunion was, I hear, a "smashing success!" The cast of characters included Bill Pollock, GregYadley, John Rockwell, John Burke, Dan and Gail Hergott, Shel and Barb Prentice, Marc and Lynn Josephson, Marty and Sandra Cain, Richard and Patty Spaziano, David and Connie Hefzel and Peter and Tricia Heed. I am confident my friend and co-scribe Mr. Rockwell will regale us with a detailed account of the festivities, so I'll only share Shel's eloquent summary: "A number of interesting stories which underscored that it's amazing we survived college years. We couldn't think of one fatality from the women's schools road trips in cars with (mildly impaired) drivers, bald tires and snow-covered roads. What a combination! We replayed some football games, some practices and the strike and talked about some profs, some courses and memories of the College. There were lots of laughs, a few tears, some regrets, but a lot of good cheer and Dartmouth spirit!" Makes me start thinking ahead to our 35th.

Meanwhile, back in Hanover, the face of our College is changing. New dorms, a new math center, an expanded engineering school and some long-overdue renovations are just a few of the visible modifications to her skyline. Yet her heart is ever the same, as I am reminded each morning of late when a hundred or more energetic peagreeners stomp out the "Salty Dog" while waiting for buses to freshman trips, the football team grunts and sweats under the watchful eye of demanding coaches and the number of backpacktoting student types suddenly swells to announce another academic year has begun.

Until next time, gents, be well and please share your news with us! Yours in Green.
