A few yesterdays ago a schoolmate of mine in Montclair, N.J., was Anne Logie. In those days I had never heard of Madison, Conn., but Anne had; she summered there (which is to say now 'here') in a house just 100 yards away from the Phillips' residence. The Phillips' niece is now my wife, Skip. At a certain moment, Anne married one of our classmates, a history professor. Now, last year, I sold a house for a family named Chittenden in Madison. One day last August, a Madison friend asked me to join him for lunch with a Dartmouth professor who was visiting our town's historical society researching Thomas Chittenden, first governor of Vermont. Of course, it was Professor Frank Smallwood, who, with Anne, was gathering material for a book. Is the loop closed yet?

Conversation turned to the N.H. presidential primaries and the dignitaries and celebrities that event draws to the campus. Some years ago Frank arrived early in the morning for his history class and found a smiling gentleman seated outside his office. In a soft southern accent the stranger offered his services as a guest lecturer. "That's interesting," said Frank, "but who are you?" "I'm the governor of Georgia and now I'm runnin' for president. Mali name is Jimmy Carter."

Frank will be on the 45 th Reunion program, reminiscing about our friend, Dr. Dickey. Perhaps he'll weave in some stories like those we heard over lunch in Madison. Like describing his reluctance to take a call back in the '70s from a TV journalist named Walters. In those days, the NBC channel wasn't one of the few to be found on Frank's TV in Norwich, Vt. How was he to know this Barbara What shername?

Dick Swain retired last June from Elkay Manufacturing Co. (plumbing supplies) based in Oak Brook, Ill. Dick was vice president and regional sales manager for Elkay, and was always especially active in industry affairs, serving on various councils and boards of a number of industry associations. Dick lives in St. Charles, Ill.
