We thought that everyone would like an update on the changes in the '44 Place. We have Dick Whiting, chair of the committee, to thank for the following report.
Toward the end of our 60th-reunion class meeting on June 15,2004, which was held at the '44 Place of the Berry addition to Baker Library, our assembled classmates voted to approve a motion authorizing an expenditure of $20,000 to replace a section of the carpeting in the '44 Place and Hier Alcove. The motion was prompted by reactions from several classmates, many of whom were viewing it for the first time. They thought the '44 Place was too cold or austere and needed "warming up" and that inadequate recognition had been given within the '44 Place to the fact that the entire penthouse level had been fi- nanced by the donations from our class as our gift to the College. Shortly after the meeting Steve Tate appointed a committee of Eric Barradale, Jack Coroon, Wemo Epply, Ann Hier, Joey Tate and Dick Whiting (chair) to review and recommend changes in our '44 Place that would increase its warmth and that feeling of identity with the Dartmouth spirit our class has so valued.
The committee submitted its report at the class meeting held during our mini-reunion in Hanover this past fall. Its recommendations were to: (1) dispense with the proposed new carpeting as impractical and too costly; (2) install, under the guidance of Ellie Stephenson, on a wall of the Hier Alcove, a print of the Hood Museums beautiful oil painting by William Metcalf (he, like Fritz, had his roots in Cornish, New Hampshire); (3) mount on the wall facing the elevator—so that all emerging on the '44 Place floor will see—four framed copies of Winter Carnival posters from our Dartmouth years; (4) install a see-through profile in one of our top floor windows identifying the hills visible in the distance; (5) erect a large sign in the entrance foyer that proclaims that the '44 Place is the gift of our class. The College agreed to underwrite the cost of the sign. The other items, estimated to cost less than $2,500, would be funded out of our class treasury.
The committee's recommendations were unanimously approved at the last falls class meeting. With the receipt of the profile of mountain views all items have been purchased and installed. We hope you will check them out on your next visit to Hanover.
