This month we are very lucky to have Dave Nutt give us some thoughts and questions about the journey into becoming old: 'Arriving in Hanover September 1940, many of us were only 17. While we were learning hygiene in Doc Pollards smut class, German panzers had occupied most of France. All surviving 1944 classmates are happy to have made it into our 80s.
"As for me, I was on a daily half-hour stretching program until my cardiologist implanted a pacemaker in 2005. However, noYeason not to exercise and leam how to be old, so I started again recently. I have no balance without a cane or walker, so no skiing or golf, but I can do the exercises holding onto the wings of two wingback chairs!
"From his Christmas card we learned that our esteemed president, Bill McElnea, would not be zooming down the Colorado slopes but would be playing golf in Palm Desert. Like many of us, Bill is learning to be old.
"What about the rest of you guys and gals? How physically active are you?"
To partially answer Dave's questions we did a little research. We found Ray Zrike at his company and John Callow at a museum in Savannahboth are still working; lan Macdonald is still swinging his golf clubs; Harry Morse is still playing tennis with three ladies from a local retirement community; and Eric Barradale celebrated his 86th birthday skiing at the Dartmouth Skiway.
The list is long for those still traveling: the Rangers to the mini from California, the Bob Harrises to Alaska, the Harry Morses and Hardy Caldwells on Dartmouth alumni trips; the Bogarts, who seem never to put their suitcases away, are visiting scattered children and touring bits of the United States, London, Budapest, St. Petersburg, Mexico, plus a cruise in the Mediterranean. Whatever you are doing—exercises, sports, travelkeep up the good work.
Reminder: have you signed up for the fall mini, September 28 to 30?
We regret to report the deaths of Richard Smith Ostberg and Robert Edward Callan. We send our condolences to the families and friends of these classmates.
