Pictures seem to be the answer for smoking out commentary from classmates. Suffice it to say that last June's column elicited the greatest response I've had from classmates. Don't misinterpret "greatest response" but four letters is a lot better than none! Van Quackenbush wrote to say he was the original supplier of the June DAM photo—it appeared in our 50th Reunion book along with Van's caption: "Doc Fielding, clowning it up at 'jam session,' summer '42. Musicians include Dacey Stevens, trumpet; Don Campbell '45, standing behind Stevens, pianist; Harry Judge '45, drums; Van (in front of piano), tenor sax; and two guitar players who strolled by." Van added that he is still "blowing my own horn, playing in our church, and also with a senior citizens club orchestra in Escondido." Seth Washburn contributed his bit from Bath, Maine. I also had a call from a '44, Carl Koenig, who had played with the Green Collegians and wanted to offer his input. Finally, Dick Livingston wrote to comment on Doc Fielding's famous pantomime of a gal struggling into a tight girdle. I guess nostalgia plays pretty well with our age group.
Jim Adams checked in recently with a reply to some info I had sent him. He mentioned a family connection with Cape Cod, specifically Chatham, and having on occasion visited Howie Thomas in Harwich. Jim added that he runs into Smed Ward, both in Florida and Vermont. John Keefe wrote declining the invitation to our Cape mini-reunion too long a drive! According to the White Plains Journal News, DonKingsley and wife Sandy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last March.
The June Cape Cod mini was attended by 17 class members, wives, and companion: Amy Stevens, Rachel and Kent Lane, Suzie and Doc Fielding, Betsey and Paul Randall, Betty and Bud Miskell, Louise and DonMcCorkindale, Jan and Farmer Mead,Ray McMahon, Janet and Ben Edmunds, and your scribe. Truly a mini but a quality group and an enjoyable gathering.
Three deaths to report: Edwin Uhl, EarlRussell, and Ormand Birkland. Our condolences to their families. Stay well!
