This has been a busy spring for out-of-Hanover mini-reunions.The action began the first weekend of March with CamiVail, organized by Steve Waterhouse. Friday morning there were roughly 100 of us with one sort of Dartmouth connection or another posed for a picture at the base of Vail Mountain before embarking on our day of skiing. In the evening we attended a cocktail party sponsored by the Dartmouth Club of Vail. One of the highlights of the weekend was the Saturday night dinner, including '65s, the Vail Club and Tuck Schoolers. Charles Sanders spoke about his book, The Boys of Winter, about the 10 th Mountain Division and particularly about several of its members who died in the course of the war. The guest of honor for the evening was William "Sarge" Brown, member of the 10th, Dartmouth ROTC leader and manager in the development of Vail Resort. He recounted many wonderful tales of his adventures over the years.
Among the '65s attending were Tucker and Gabriella Mays, Jim Aiken, Ted Atkinson and wife Marcia, Sue Bloch and daughter Rebecca (Rich was doing magic on a cruise ship off the coast of Africa), Chuck and Gretchen Lobitz, Bill Webster with three sons and two brothers, Roger Hansen, Marsh Wallach, Norm and Ellen Christianson and our wonderful hosts Linda and Steve Waterhouse.
April Fool's Day saw the assembling of the crew for the first annual class of'6s stag golf outing in Scottsdale, Arizona. Punch Lochridge pulled the outing together. He splits his time between Scottsdaleand Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Hewas assisted by Norm Leach, who spends winters in Arizona and summers in Vancouver. His buddy from Dartmouth hockey days, Chip Hayes, came in from L.A. John Daily, also a member of Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, spends the warm part of the year in his old stomping grounds of Rye, New York. Dennis Bekemeyer came in from Seatde. He works for the Sidley Austin law firm in New York City and flies back and forth regularly to do work related to aircraft financing. In his spare time he's training for the London Marathon. Sven Karlen flew in from Hanover, where he is doing stock brokerage work. Peter Baumbush took time from his work as a tax accountant and partner at Gibson Dunn and Crutcher in Washington, D.C., to join us. We played five rounds in four days at gorgeous courses, while enjoying delightful eateries in and around Scottsdale. Many thanks to Punch.
The Dartmouth Fund campaign winds up June 30. Jim Griffiths, our head agent, thanks those who have contributed and reminds those who have not, please join us in supporting the fund at whatever level you can. The primary goal is to have as many of us participating as possible.
Join us on October 19 to 21 at Pierces Inn for the fall mini-reunion, taking place on Homecoming Weekend. Bob McConnaughey is putting together a great program.
