A recent e-mail from Patty Carson Anderson of Denver, a Dartmouth daughter and sister, brought us up to date on her longtime friend Colin Stewart, our own 1948 Olympic skier and, along with Sonny Drury, Hanover native. Colin's time off to train and other obligations resulted in his finally getting his Dartmouth degree in 1951. He moved on to Harvard's School of Design before going on to Denver, Colorado, as an architect. He was an early fan of Vail, Colorado, and the skiing community there, eventually becoming a resident. Following an accident he returned to the Denver area in the late 1980s where he now resides in an assisted living facility.

This takes me back to the 1944 summer, when many of us converged on Hanover, callow youths getting a head start on college before the draft caught up with us. It was a beautiful summer on campus and one had to feel sorry for humanities professors pressed into teaching math and science courses to V-12 cadets and our little handful of youngsters and 4-Fs. It was possible to cover long distances just by sticking out a thumb at the Inn corner and we discovered a lot of New England that way.

It was a wonderful ride—returning to Hanover after time in the service and finding not only classmates but a 10-year span of other classes as well on the Plain finishing up work toward a cherished Dartmouth degree. If my memories are correct, I've missed two reunions since then and it's always been fun to renew the ties.

Between newsletters and terms as class secretary and 50th and 60th books, I've had the privilege of being in closer touch with you all than most classmates, and it has been rewarding. I've marveled at how we've scattered geographically and the varieties of vocations we've chosen. I'm sad that so many have become distant because we have not been able to share their lives, too. For the past 45 years or so I've worked to keep alive the spirit of the Dartmouth fellowship as I saw it first demonstrated as a lowly gob on liberty in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1945. If I have been a bit strident in that effort it is without shame because the Dartmouth I experienced will never again be equaled in my eyes. You will be enjoying a fresh pen after this issue. Thanks for putting up with me over the years and Godspeed.
