One of the most surprising aspects of the rollout of the new president in early March was the absence of leaks. At least none that were accurate. That made trustee Dr. Al Mulley ’70, chair of the search team, happy. He notes that one of the team’s goals was to “be as open and transparent as possible…while being as confidential as necessary to respect the interests” of those involved in the search. “Since candidates don’t know who other candidates are, even speculation by reporters that is dead wrong can lead to candidates dropping out,” he says. Mulley adds that “mutual respect” between the editors of The D and his team enabled the student paper to nab its early and noteworthy exclusives about Dr. Jim Yong Kim, Dartmouth’s presidentelect. Among those who were “dead wrong” about the pick: student-run Dartblog.com, which reported that Tufts provost/senior VP Jamshed Bharucha (a former Dartmouth provost) would land the job. The post was deleted immediately after Kim was announced, even though other blogs had already linked to it. Two days later Dartblog called for “transparency” on the part of the new administration.
