Ned Jacoby’s winter report on Hanover continues from the last issue: “Percy Rideout, Walker Weed, Joe Duncan, Page Smith, Bud Raymond, Ed Schecter and other ’40s will be part of a forthcoming complete history of skiing at Dartmouth. Put together by Steve Waterhouse ’65, it documents how the College has been a pioneering contributor to virtually every aspect of the skiing industry in the United States, and there will be one full chapter devoted to the part played by Dartmouth in the famous 10th Mountain Division. The goal is to have the book finished for release at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.
“And any of you who are as confused as I am by the growing maze of College buildings hiding behind the Green and the reassuring fronts of Baker, Rollins Chapel and Dartmouth Row might enjoy Scott Meachum’s Dartmouth College: The Campus Guide. It’s a new photo book featuring eight walks through different areas of the College campus while explaining the building functions and histories. Might be something to get for your next trip to Hanover.
“It’s minus 12 Fahrenheit out right now so think I’ll postpone my first guided campus walk until later. Like June.”
Thanks again, Ned, for the word from Hanover. The scene has indeed changed since the gas station across Main Street from the post office was the introduction to town and Crosby Hall (between Sanborn and Hitchcock) housed the famed Dartmouth Eye Clinic.
