Ned Jacoby responded last winter to my request for news from Hanover: “In December Joan Montagne called with an invitation to a surprise 90th (sound familiar?) extra birthday celebration for her dad, Walker Weed, at the Weed’s farm on Three Mile Road in Etna, New Hampshire. Joan and her husband teach at the University of Montana in Bozeman and spend the summers in northern Mongolia’s Darhad Valley helping the villagers there adapt to the modern world. Walker and Hazel’s house is filled with furniture that he designed and built and it’s not hard to see why last year he received the Award of Distinction from the American Craft Council’s Furniture Society.
“We had dinner several weeks ago at Kendal with Howard Wriggins’ wife, Sally Hovey Wriggins, who has written a number of books on the legendary Central Asian Silk Road, Chinese folk tales and life and politics in Sri Lanka, where she and Howard lived for many years during his service there as U.S. ambassador.
“Twice in a week I’ve run into—almost literally—Bill Halsey and his wife, Tipi. Once was at the Centerra Co-op, where we then had lunch together and caught up on Bill’s still-active architectural career across the river in Vermont. And then a few days later in Staples at ‘big box store alley’ in West Lebanon. Just shows that things haven’t become that populated up here—yet!”
Thanks, Ned. We’re happy the move to Hanover is working well for you and Bee.
