As spring creeps reluctantly to the North Country the College baseball team advances toward an Ivy League championship with only one loss at this writing. The new Rolfe Field is a fine asset, although April in Hanover is not ideal weather, says Al Quirk. In our day Al spent his springs on the pitcher’s mound, but now it’s more in front of his easel with his oils. Another painting classmate is Mike Gish, who had a successful exhibition on Block Island, Rhode Island, last June. He is having a joint exhibit with son Peter ’84, at the gallery at the Hotel Coolidge in White River Junction, Vermont, during our reunion. Treasurer George Hartmann has a note of thanks from the Hood Museum for our class donation of $5,000 toward our endowment of Native American art, as proposed by Dave Raynolds and voted at our class meeting last fall. The federal stimulus bill contains money for high-speed rail. California’s high-speed rail czar Quent Kopp is hopeful after a visit to Washington and with House Speaker Pelosi. Among the feats of our octogenarian jocks are the 15K and 5K wins in March by Paul Woodberry (by land) Jay Urdtadt (by sea).

Spring practice for the football team sees Coach Teevens and several new assistant coaches looking for more success in the running game, which can, in turn, make the passing game more effective.

I hope to see you all at our 60th. We’ll be saying good-bye to Jim Wright and welcome aboard to Dr. Jim Yong Kim. We’ll have a new slate of officers. It has been my pleasure to serve as secretary and I expect the class of ’49 to remain front and center.

Our loss this spring is Wade “Kansas” Elliott.
