Prayer Book Interleaves issued in 1942 by the Oxford University Press by William Palmer Ladd '91, late dean of the Berkeley Divinity School. The preface under date of June, 1941, is signed by Ladd who passed away July 1.

As a Congregationalist, I felt inadequate to comment on this book which I read with appreciation of its value so I insert the following review by my friend the Rev. Dr. James L. Tryon, Harvard, '94.

"PRAYER BOOK INTERLEAVES BY WILLIAM PALMER LADD.

"This is a fraternal and informal running commentary on the historical development and present practices embodied in the English and American Books of Common Prayer such as would lend charm to a classroom hour in a theological seminary and would be enlightening to anybody who is interested in liturgical worship. The writer makes comparisons of the uses of the Protestant Episcopal Church with the customs of other religious bodies, both Roman arid Protestant, and looks back with admiration to the moderate reforms of Cranmer in the Prayer Book of 1549. His observations concern chiefly the office of Holy Communion which he would make the central feature of Sunday worship, but he would on occasion simplify it, vary it in some details, dramatize it, and in the best sense humanize it that it might have a broad and vital appeal to both laity and clergy."
