The Englewood New Jersey Press of November 20 features an article headed "New Jersey's Historian," who turns out to be none other than our dear friend and classmate, Prof. Roy W. Hatch. In it X find that Roy was born in Marshfield, Massachusetts, where Judge Keniston has his summer home that "Beezle" Parker, myself, and our wives have visited for pleasant week-ends. Roy was chosen to write the history of New Jersey in the 1947 World Book Encyclopedia and the article praises the simple, clear and colorful manner in which he presents the story. Roy has written many books on education and geography and his name is very favorably known as an educator all over the United States so that, since his retirement as Professor of Education in New Jersey State Teacher's College, he is called to many places in the West and South to give talks and short courses. All his three children have followed their father's vocation. Dr. Winslow Hatch is head of the Department of Botany at Washington State College, Prof. David Hatch is asst. professor of Sociology in Kentucky University, and his daughter Grace was a teacher of kindergarten at Montclair before her marriage.
The Providence Bulletin of December 5 has a splendid article on Dr. Arthur Ruggles, who retired from a full life's work as superintendent of the Butler Hospital, January 1, of this year. Arthur became asst. superintendent in 1909 and superintendent in 1922. He has made a national reputation as a psychiatrist and in 1942 was president of the American Psychiatric Association. He has been a leader in the mental hygiene movement and lectured at Brown, Yale and other colleges on the subject of Mental Health. Still wishing to retain his advice, the Butler Hospital trustees created the new office of general consultant and appointed Arthur to that post.
Your Secretary has been through three howling New England snow storms and is fleeing to the South.
