On January 31 Bob Monahan '29, who had come down to Philadelphia to attend the wedding of older brother, DeLong H. Monahan '24, had lunch with 25 of the Philadelphia brethren. Bob, who is College Forester and a member of the Public Relations Council, spoke informally to the group. He gave us a good deal of very interesting information about several aspects of Dartmouth activity concerning which most of us knew very little.
For example, we learned that the woodcutting operations on the College Grant yielded a clear profit of something like $24,000 for the year 1949. These profits are invested in scholarships for Dartmouth undergraduates. However, Bob pointed out that the value of this woodland is not entirely commercial. The number of undergraduates who visit the grant for fishing and hunting has increased greatly in the last few years; as a matter of fact the past hunting season s records for deer shot in New Hampshire (i.e., antler spread and number of points) were made on the Dartmouth property. Bob also cleared up the misconception that the College Grant is tax free; Dartmouth has always paid a substantial annual property tax. Consequently, the fact that the College enjoys an income from the Grant not only constitutes an increase in revenue; it also covers one item of yearly expense.
Bob recently assisted the author of an excellent Dartmouth article in The Lincoln-Mercury Times, January-February 1950. Try to procure a copy of this magazine; most Lincoln-Mercury dealers will probably have a couple of copies left by the time you read this. The spread includes a mighty interesting oblique aerial view of Hanover in color.
Join us at our weekly luncheons, still held at noon on Monday at The Princeton Club, 1223 Locust Street, Philadelphia.
