Perhaps the big current news is the election of Lloyd Brace as a Trustee of the College to add to his many directorships and titles.
Tibby Marshall, Bank of the Manhattan Company's President, was in national news when a contemplated merger between that Bank and the Chase National Bank was on the fire. It is commonly understood that negotiations were broken off because of difficulties caused by the precise wording of the Bank of Manhattan Co.'s original charter. Tibby, incidentally, was elected a director of the Commerce and Industry Association of New York, Inc., yesterday. He is a director of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company and the Commercial Union Assurance Company, Ltd. Tibby is a trustee and treasurer of the American University of Beirut (Lebanon) and a trustee of the Northfield Schools, Northfield; Mass.
Bill Beacham tells me he had a very successful, but short, bird-hunting trip to Merry Meeting Bay on the Kennebec River in Maine above Bath. The method of hunting is new to me. They pole through the marshes in a skull about 13-16 feet long and they lie flat on their backs. They use a bird dog for retrieving and wooden decoys to lure the game. Shooting is done from a sitting position. Bill reported a good bag of black ducks, pintails and teal. It must be quite a sport as the skull only has about six inches of freeboard.
Eddie Pease recently took the Sunday sleeper to Chicago and aboard bumped into Bob Rahmanop going to attend a shoe convention for his duPont subsidiary. Whitey lunched with Woody Wilson and reports that Woody is bushed after three weeks of housewarming in General Electric's new building in Cambridge.
Another first for 1925—we have the most sons (12) in the freshman class. They are Douglas N. Archibald, Rye, N. Y.; William H. Bickford, Newton Square, Pa.; Robert C. Borwell Jr., Oak Park, 111.; William R. Carter Jr., Wellesley Hills, Mass.; George H. CasselsSmith, Ruxton, Md.; Horton Conrad Jr., Northfield, Ill.; David E. Elder, Amherst, Mass.; Miles Garrod, Wellesley Hills, Mass.; Lane W. Goss, Worcester, Mass.; Paul H. Hollenbeck, Westport, Conn.; Thornton Jenkins, Schenectady, N. Y.; and William S. Lyon, Lake Forest, Ill.
Les King has become a registered representative with the Stock Exchange firm of duPont, Homsey & Company in its Boston office. Lt. Col. Chuck Graydon wrote an interesting note to Ford Whelden:
"Here is a coincidence. Moved here from Katonah, N. Y., a few weeks ago as my service assignment is here. We moved into an apartment which, as you see, is on 'Hanover Court.' Outside the apartment is an old-fashioned gas street lamp which came from Hanover, N. H., a gift from the town fathers, and has a brass plate on it containing the names of the town father donors. So, am close to Hanover here."
Seen at the Harvard game were Connie Conrad, the Pete Haffenreffers, Johnny GarrodEddie Pease, the Ed Childs, Line Davis, BobPierces, Ford Wheldens and undoubtedly many more I missed by not being in our class section. The Haffenreffers, Wheldens and Pierces enjoyed something different. They arrived at the Stadium early, got a good parking space and had their cocktails and lunch right there, thus missing all the elbow pushing and possible late arrival. Another thought for the future is that one of the older classes hires a canopied excursion boat, cruises the two or three miles from Boston up the Charles River, lunches aboard, docks at the Weld Boat House, and then returns to Boston after the game without the benefit of traffic jams. Would you like to try this come another fall? Others attending were the Frank Wallises,George Newcombs, Lou Kimballs and BillBunting down from Toronto as a brand new father. Congratulations, Bill. The Ed Childs later went to visit their daughter at Sargent School in Cambridge.
Haven't any report on who went to New Haven because atrocious weather conditions kept many away. About 32,000 tickets were bought, but only 20,000 attended, against a normal 60,000 plus. Connie Conrad spent most of the pre-Harvard game week around Boston but it was strictly business so he had little chance to fraternize. Then he was going to New York and at last reports had seen only Jack Davis.
