Apparently law and order has come to the badlands. Max "Highpockets" Edwards has been named assistant district attorney in the Fifth Judicial District of New Mexico. Finding the route to the first million tougher that way, "Highpockets" plans to return to civil practice in January. He reports that he is still single but has built a hacienda in Hobbs, N. M., "a kind of Wayside Inn for itinerant lease brokers, female temperance leaders of the Bible Belt, and gentle dogs." He stocks more scotch than groceries, and would be happy to have any of you guys (with clean records) stop in. Recalling those earthy discussions with Willy Ard in Sanborn, Max feels a patronly satisfaction in seeing that Bill has "put sex on a paying basis." For you guys still driving a '49 Ford, contact Max regarding Life in near-by Midland, Tex. "The only difference between the rich and the poor (in Midland) is that the poor people have to wash their own Cadillacs."
Horace Blood, now an Army medico, is chief of Ear, Nose and Throat at a 1000-bed hospital in Osaka, Japan. A staunch New Hampshire Republican, Horace found his recent luncheon companion, John Eisenhower, a "very nice guy." Before going overseas, Horace ran into Harry Morse in Toronto where they took their American Board examinations in Otorhinolaryngology (their last and final exams in the field of Ear, Nose, and Throat), the CraigMacbeths with new baby daughter in Orange, N. J., and Jim Deakins at Iranis Air Force Base in California.
A labor book written by Dr. Joe Goldstein has "startled Britain, Right, Left, and Center," according to a New York Times dispatch from London. Joe put in five years' research on a large transit union while studying for his doctorate at the University of London on a Fulbright scholarship. His revealing report has given the English editorial writers many weeks food for indignation (against the state of the union situation) Joe is now back in the states and begins work as chief law clerk for one of the justices of the U.S. District of Appeals in Sept.
Dr. Brad Long has gone into private practice in association with two other San Francisco doctors.... "Hose" Craig is now in Yokohama, should be coming back soon (we hope)... ran into Rock and Dottie Davidson when I was in Washington recently, and for the first time, met their little son Jim. A real tiger, that lad. The stork is scheduled to bring him a playmate in September.... Dick Whiting is either officially out, or almost out, of the Army... on the way home from Washington I met Junius Hoffman and his pretty spouse Jean in Hershey. They were en route to Maine for their vacation, and coincidentally enough, crossed paths with Rocky Davidson in a Washington traffic jam the next day. Junius is now practicing law in Columbus.
Dick Rondeau has been named hockey coach of Providence College. Hockey has not been a varsity sport at the school in the past, and Dick will be starting from scratch. He has already set a schedule for next year.
