The election returns from the first Hampden District in Springfield have been slow in filtering to Ohio and I regret not being able to report the margin o£ Sen. Zarod's victory. At least he carried Mr. Kennedy in Massachusetts and the less said about that, the better.
Mark Peisch has been appointed director of University Admissions and Financial Aid at Columbia. Mark was formerly director of admissions for Columbia's Graduate Faculties. We really should refer to Mark as Dr. Peisch since he picked up his Ph.D. last year. His work in the educational field has been varied and interesting. After resigning his position at Dartmouth as instructor of Fine Arts and Archaeology in 1950, Mark went to Columbia as lecturer in the same field and additionally was named the University's Foreign Student Advisor. In the latter capacity, he took a two-month tour in 1953 of the large educational centers in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey for the purpose of determining the best possible training program to fit foreign students for leadership in their own lands.
Ab Davis has received another promotion, this time to the new position of assistant commercial manager with the Southern New England Telephone Company in New Haven. Ab has been with them since 1946. And Jim Johnson, also with Southern New England Telephone and commercial manager of their Wallingford office, was recently named chairman of the United Fund's residential division in Wallingford. Jim has long been active in civic affairs and is now vice chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, vice chairman of the Red Cross, a director of the United Fund, and a member of the Rotary Club and the YMCA.
Following the example of the Bud Coiths, Bob and Bee Rader are getting back into the diaper derby. Young Martha Ellen Rader joined the family June 25 and should have a pleasant youth with built-in baby sitters. Pris, fourteen, Cathy, twelve, and Ric, ten.
Lem Arnold is now making his home in Van Nuys, a pleasant community outside Angeles. I usually stay out there when I'm on the coast and will have to give him a ring next time. A few miles away, in Ventura, LeRoy Briggs has just been named Head of the Engineering Department at Ventura College. Major Fred Hickey is a student again, now at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Bill McCloskey, formerly representing Otis Elevator in St. Louis, is now zone service manager for Otis in Cleveland and making his home in Shaker Heights. The last time I wrote about a gentleman in the class known to some as the "Rock" he was so enraged he went all the way with a person toperson long distance phone call to inform me that if I ever mentioned his name again in this column he would treat me to a knuckle sandwich or some such act of violence. I'm going to be in Dallas later thisweek and will call him from a public pay phone and see if in future columns I can mention H--- D--- again.
Don Oakes, principal of the Berkshire Country Day School in Lenox, Mass., haslong been an advocate for affecting better reading techniques for youngsters. In the two years he has been at Berkshire, success-seems to have attended his program. Returning to the phonics method, as opposed to the sight reading approach, and emphasizing reading in the curriculum, he starts the youngsters reading in kindergarten and gives them a summer reading list to go through before starting first grade. By second grade, they are so advanced that the school uses books from England because American publishers haven't been able to provide second grade books that are advanced enough. A free lance writer before taking the position at Berkshire, Don has since published some children's books and pursues a program of juvenile writing.
With every good wish for a happy holiday season and a bright and successful new year {notwithstanding the political misadventures of '61).
