The Great Ninety-four News at this writing is the scheduled Fall Roundup at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Ames at Somersworth, N. H, October 11. About 20 people are expected. Full report in December issue.
The distaff side of the Class will recall the time when "the wives of '94 men" showed their appreciation of the entertainment which Mrs. Ashley Hardy had shown them at Hanover during Reunion days. Three exquisite pieces of silver were the visible token. More recently Mrs. Hardy intimated her desire that this silver be lodged with a '94 family and handed down from generation to generation. In high class circles (the Secretary not participating in the final decision) it was resolved that this silver should be handed down in the Secretary's family. Accordingly, the following correspondence has ensued. First, from John Leverett Merrill Jr., aged ten:
Townsend, Mass.
Dear Mrs. Hardy: My Grandfather told me that you have given our family some pieces of sterling silver which was given to you by the Dartmouth class of '94.... Since I am his oldest Grandson he has proposed giving me the silver. I want to thank you for it. I suppose you know that if I go to Dartmouth I will be the fifth generation.
John Merrill, Jr.
Next, Mrs. Hardy's response: 4 Clement Road, Hanover, N. H.
Dear John: Thank you for your letter. I'm very interested to know that you belong to the fifth generation of the Merrill family who have always gone to Dartmouth College and I learned recently that you are entered for 1962.
I am glad that your grandfather decided to give you the silver which was given me by the class of '94 to which he belongs.
Can't you persuade your grandfather to bring you to Hanover some time? I'd like to meet you very much.
With all good wishes,
Adelaide S. Hardy.
Everyone will be glad to know that Mrs. Irving Read, who barely escaped with broken bones at the time her husband was killed in the automobile accident, has spent the time since leaving the hospital with her children, and is slowly but surely convalescing. She writes from Walnut Creek, Calif., under date of September 9: "... I will soon be in Berkeley for a while and hope to go home as soon as I can get the cast off my ankle. I am still walking with crutches...
