We have just received the sad word that Lieut. Col. John B. Clark succumbed to polio at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D. C., on October 21. In possession of only the briefest information about John, we have asked Bill Yelverton, who knew him in Washington, to prepare the article in the In Memoriam section of this issue.
The new post of Industrial Agent for the city of Manchester, N. H., has been awarded Jack Teuton, popular head of the Industrial Department of the N. H. Planning and Development Commission; Jack is considered one of the outsanding industrial engineers in the country and a particular authority on work in New England.... Speaking of Manchester, we learn that Joe Millimet, one of that city's most talented lawyers, worked long and hard for the election of a Democratic governor ... since we are typing this just as returns are coming in we don't know whether Joe's man made it. Maybe we should quote one of Joe's statements, out of context, when he said, "It's no disgrace to be a Democrat."
Scurrying around the Hardware Show in Grand Central Palace the first part of October we discovered the most popular exhibit was being presided over by a debonair young chap, "Huffy" Huffman, president of a Dayton firm by the same name... the guy is plenty plus on sales hep, having parlayed his bicycle and lawnmower business into a plant that's jumpin' two shifts around the calendar - 'n fact, he's planning more bricks and mortar to meet the demand. Huff saw Jack Matzinger in June in La Jolla, Calif., and found the big boy doing a pack of business in his men's wear store, with no regrets for having given Carson Pirie the slip and stepping out on his own.
Eggers and Higgins, N. Y. architects, have appointed Jack Smith a member of the firm; Jack, a member of the American Institute of Architects, has been with Eggers for 14 years and works mainly on school and college architecture. He is author of "Safety in Swimming Pool Construction," currently appearing in the yearbook of American School and University, is chairman of the National A.A.U. and N.C.A.A. Joint Diving Committee, was U. S. representative on the International Olympic Diving Committee and for diversion, keeps active in the Connecticut Playmakers, a local amateur theater group.
October 30 proved a swell night out for a bunch of the Boston clan (Muello, Ingersoll,Coronis, Stewart, England, Fitzherbert, Dearborn, Houlihan, Nilsson, Thomas, Knight,Higbee, Dailey and the scribe) alibi a bachelor party for Frank Weston who, as this is written, has only a couple of single days remaining. As reported earlier, Miss Elsie Vege will help the Treasurer with mailing any Classbills still due after November 8. We're ushering the big event and will do our level best to bring the guy through.... As just noted, EdNilsson is in the States again yup, Capu Ed succeeded in getting himself declared "surplus" in the Air Route Traffic Control in the Tokyo Control Center and he's rather firm when he states that all the geishas in Nippon couldn't drag him back. Ed remains a fly-boy to the core and has returned with pleasure toVan Dusen Aircraft and will headquarter at Teterboro.
Speaking of Tokyo, here's what Capt. JoeDavis reports from GHQ there: "A slight change has come about in my lucky-as-hell-to- be-here assignment. Was in Korea recently for a week of TDY, and among other places was actually on the spot at Panmunjon. As an, old Poli-History major, that sort of hits a high spot, for this overseas tour, at least. If nothing intervenes, hope to be civilian on 31 March. Plan to visit Hanover again before starting out in quest of a job. Getting a bit tired of that unhappy experience, but guess it will have to be endured and conquered." Sure hope you get busted out on schedule, Joe, but don't be impatient... you'll still have over 25 years to work for someone before Social! Security sets in.
Forgot last month to mention that TonyMuello flew to Holland, West Germany, Belgium and Paris for a four-week holiday with Esther and the two youngsters. Tony sold himself to Esther's folks in Rotterdam and proceeded thereafter to lead the life of Riley - which, according to Tony, is no trick, once on the Continent. It's the tab for getting there and back that hurts.
