We were all saddened on November 2 to learn of the passing of Ginny Fitzherbert, Pete's brave wife. Dartmouth ranked high on Ginny's list of interests and it was her urging, despite her illness, that caused Pete finally to accept the job as Class Agent earlier this year. Her courage and unselfish spirit will always be an inspiration to those of us who knew her. We express the sincere sympathy of the entire Class to Pete and his two fine children, Tony and Nancy.
Deborah Jean joined the Mike Boyds of Denver on July 6 . .. got it straight from the old man when a few of us locals had the pleasure of lunching with Mike, in Boston on business for Stearns-Roger Mfg. Company, Denver engineering firm. Nothing would please brother Boyd more than to have S-R expand operations, open a New England branch and set him up as manager, provided sister Boyd would forsake her native Colorado. FredDailey warned Mike of the ever-present danger when you transplant 'em .. . claimed it was touch 'n go for him, all during the chilly winter of 1948, as to whether wife Julia packed and made tracks for south Georgia and home. ...The Directors have just, advised us that Monroe Greenbaum has agreed to direct the destinies of the Lion Match Co., Inc. from the office of the president... so, if you occasionally puff a fag, a cheroot, a meerschaum, or if you're just a pyromaniac be sure henceforth you do your igniting with Monnie's Matches.
The good Florida professor, Art Funk, about whom we babbled a couple of issues ago obliges with the name of his youngest son, Jimmy, now 11/2. As we surmised, Art is back in Gainesville teaching History and Social Sciences and may be getting closer to active duty by the minute since having become C. O. of the local Naval Reserve organized surface unit.
As we grind this out the Yale score has just come in and doubtless those fearless souls who made the Bowl, notwithstanding the elements, got a thrill seeing the boys pull the game out in the closing minutes. Brint Schorer was due to have been there, if for no other reason than to get the mates to comona-his-house for a drink and the launching of his new recreation room! Brint tells us he has DARTMOUTH inlaid in white tiles on a green floor. Knotty pine walls are plywood supplied by classmate Bob Keller and Bob was to have been there to help squeeze the limes at the party. Business is just fair, says Brint, who's beginning to get concerned by his boys' rapid approach to college age .. . it's enough to scare the coolest of us, B.T., old man In case yo'all down south of North Ca'lina ever see a familiar face that's doin' a heap a hustlin' it's more'n likely it belongs to SidBarr; Melvin Shoe leaves it up to Sid to put the "Tom Drake" line over for them in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee and Sid sends his best to all because he says he hasn't seen a '36er for the longest time. . . . Speaking of seeing '36ers, we hadn't been in the Dartmouth Club in New York for lunch for over a year and when we broke over last week we ran smack dab into Fred Gonnerman, looking as happy and pros perous as ever.
Having left Detroit in September, DanSchwartz tells us he feels his new administrative and educational duties with the American Cancer Society, Inc. seem useful. Due to health problems in his own family Dan felt it wise to give up his organization work with the United Public Workers of America in Michigan and come to New York City. ... We took a note we got from Charlie Lehman to our local druggist and he said that the good doctor and Betty had had lunch recently with Marion and Fred Babcock in Pittsburgh . .. don't mind our ribbing, Charlie, you're an artist cpmpared with the guy that writes our prescriptions. . . and thanks for the clipping containing quotes from President Lou Benezet's speech opening the 137 th year at Allegheny College as follows: "So long as we have a pleasure-mad public seeking not only game thrills but the chance to bet a sure buck, our young men in college will sooner or later fall prey to pressure. Let the college games alone. Call off your subway alumni,^your superduper hero press writers. Call off your trick betting polls. If you like to see amateur games played by students with some athletic skill and with a lot of spirit, come and watch. If not leave us alone." ... to which we say Amen.
Brace yourselves when we tell you that OllieBrown has a new nipper, number 6.. . yup, born 6 June, he's the number 5 boy and as yet we haven't any name for him; at about the same time Ollie was put in-charge of Ready-toWear at his West Virginia employer's department store .. . about now, Ollie, we'd have an eye on the comptroller's job. . . . While on the subject of June, we're happy to pass on the good word that wme next June Al Hutchinson and the former Miss Margaret Funk of New Mexico will celebrate their first wedding anniversary, probably in Charlottesville, Va. ... A note from Art Appleton tells us he's proud and tickled about the arrival on 23 August of his and Martha's new daughter Linda Charlotte.
And now to leave you with a high note, and you can set aside your bifocals for this one ... it was twins, Jane and Elizabeth, on July 5 to Marguerite and Tom Monagan, which makes the total SEVEN for the young doctor whose only comment, a classic understatement, laconically reads: "Pediatrically busy at home and abroad."
Thanks, all, for postcards—we'll run many more in next installment.
