As is our custom, we'll look first at news of a social nature. From Hanover comes word that Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Manuel became parents of twin sons on November 27. Ralph is with the College Administration.
On November 21, the former Miss Carol Critz and Dave Whitmore were married in Webster, N. Y. Both Dave, who is now with the Continental Insurance Companies of Rochester, and Carol are members of the Carl Dengler Orchestra of Rochester. Dave has done some graduate work at the Eastman School of Music.
We have two engagements to report this month. Miss Mary Haugh and Bill Good-rich announced their intentions on November 5. Bill, who picked up his M.B.A. degree at Harvard, is now a trust officer at the First National Bank of Chicago. Also engaged are Miss Gloria Cohn and Al Smukler. Al graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, following Dartmouth.
"Assault on Everest" is the title of a slide show which Barry Corbet has been presenting recently. Barry was a member of the 1963 American expedition which made the first climb of the West Ridge of the mountain. In the summer, Barry works as a guide in Grand Teton National Park. He's a ski instructor in the winter months.
Word has just been received from the front that George (Marty) Martinson recently was named the most outstanding noncommissioned officer of HQ SVC Battalion, 102nd artillery Quartermaster's Corps at Otis Field. Marty has taken leave from his position with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Boston to complete his military obligation. He and Mary Jane, who live in Marblehead, have two children.
In addition to outstanding NCO's and other EM presently serving with Uncle Sam, the class also boasts its share of military officers, many of them civilian professional men. Capt. John Hibbs Jr., a physician, is in the Marine Corps, stationed with the 8th Special Forces Group at Fort Gulick in the Canal Zone. John had been at the University of Oregon Hospital in Portland prior to commissioning in the Marines. Lt. BryantBarnard, a Navy physician is with the "USS Independence."
Dr. Dodd Wilson is at Paradise Point at Camp Lejeune, N. C. Capt. AI Squitieri, also an Army physician, is with the 3rd Howitzer Battalion of the 37th Artillery Division. Capt. Frank Gould is assigned to the dental detachment at Fort Benning, Ga.
Captain Richard T. (Dick) Bilinsky, and wife, Sandra, are now down at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas, where Dick has assumed the post of Chief of Medicine. Army Captain Sam Smith and wife Robin are in Honolulu, where Sam is a physician at U.S. Army Tripler General Hospital.
We also have news of several classmates who are now involved in the field of medicine in a civilian capacity. Dr. Sander Robins is at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Dr.Jack Wolper is a resident in ophthalmology at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Jack had been at Cambridge (Mass.) City Hospital. Dr. Sam Silverstein is at Rockefeller Institute in New York. Dr. Don Mclntyre is now an intern at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Dr. AI Gazzaniga is presently a surgical resident at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Dr.John Gundy is a pediatric resident at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Jack graduated from Cornell University Medical College.
Reverend Rick Martin is now the rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Pomeroy, Ohio. To bring you up to date on the Martins, I quote portions of a Christmas card supplement distributed by Rick and Dian: ". . . We are happily situated in the kind of job that I have always dreamed of, in the kind of setting that is a fine place to begin, with a spacious old rectory behind the church that is Dian's joy.
"Pomeroy is under river-water every spring, but looks beautiful at night reflected in the Big Bend of the Ohio. We take off weekly to Parkersburg, W. Va., or Athens, Ohio, where Dian is taking a theater workshop at Ohio University during the week.
"Frankie enjoys kindergarten here and Timmy has recovered from pushing his hand through the storm door (eight stitches). Andy celebrated his first, fat birthday on December 1.
"Temporarily I have been struck by what might be called 'congregation's revenge.' With strained vocal cords acquired as assistant chaplain and teacher at Valley Forge Military Academy last year, aggravated by an ordinary sore throat, I have been put on total vocal rest for an uncertain length of time. Still, we all discover more than one way to skin a cat, and I am making do with lay readers, typed sermons, and a 'magic slate' for home visits. .. ."
Reverend Paul Frederick is a minister at the East Shore Methodist Church in Euclid, Ohio. Paul had been at the Tipton (Mich.) Community Church prior to this assignment.
A couple of former, classmates are still engaged in academic endeavor of one form or another. Dave Chisdes is now a graduate student in chemistry at the University of Vermont. Dave, who obtained his master of science degree at Northeastern University in Boston in 1960, was a physical chemist with RCA in Lancaster, Pa., prior to returning to the books. Forrest Smith Jr. is now studying in Italy.
The engineering profession has obtained at least six '58's. Seiko Enbutsu is a coordinating engineer for Mitsui Miike Machinery Co., Ltd. in Fukuoka-ken, Japan. Jim Riffle is an applications engineer for Cummins Engine Co. in Columbus, Ind. Jim and Pat have one son, Bryan. Hal Davis is a products engineer with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. in Allentown, Pa. Hal was formerly with General Electric Co. in their technical marketing program in Schenectady, N. Y. Lin Hall is now a sanitation engineer in Boston. Lin and Peggy have two boys- Dave, 3½ and Danny, 6 mos. Joel Portugal is a packaging engineer in New York City. Joel and Helen, now living in Jamaica Estates, have a boy, Gary, 3. John McCloskey is an engineer with New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. at Bell Labs in Murray Hill. Jack and Jill have three children. We no longer need be concerned with the problem of which hill they went up to get the water.
To close this message, we'll take a look at classmates in varied and sundry occupations. Angie Van Dessel Jr. is with the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps detachment at Duke University in Durham, N. C. Ensign Rollie Habicht is now at the U.S. Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. Also in the employ of Uncle Sam is Ernest Holm Jr., who is a foreign service officer, working for the State Department. Ernie has been in Veracruz, Mexico at the American Embassy.
Bridegroom Joe Blake '58 is fitted withsame ball and chain he helped attach toclassmate Puffy Stoddart (r) four yearsbefore. Joe married Elizabeth Rowland.
