Memorial Fund Chairman, JACK D. GUNTHER Air Reduction Co., Inc., 60 East 42nd St., New York 17, N. Y.
The first pre-reunion event was a Class dinner at the New York Dartmouth Club the evening of October 13. Herb Ball, who ran it, reports:
"We had cocktails from six to seven and then dinner. Jack Gunther made a short talk and assured everyone that there would be no solicitation for the Fund during reunion; nor would there be any solicitations for the Fund during class luncheons and dinners. I asked each man present to stand and give a thumbnail sketch of himself and family and his hobby activities. Surprisingly enough, these little sketches were of tremendous interest and gave us a pretty good idea of the activities of each classmate. The following were present: Jim Loveland, Ed Felch, Fred Poeter, Dick Robin, Bill Morgan, Jack Ackley, Jack Moxon (up from Reading, Pa.), Jack Gunther, Herb Ball, Lyt Johnston, Will Torbert, Russ Goudey, Bob Ramage, Carl Pittelkow, Ed Spetnagel, Ken MacNair, Frank Small, Van Jamieson, John McNamara, Harry Enders and Ted Baehr. The next class dinners are scheduled for January 8 and March 17. It would appear that most everyone last evening hoped to attend Reunion."
The second such affair was a class cocktail party at Bob and Mary Louise Austin's spacious home in Chestnut Hill, right after the Harvard game. At that and other gatherings in the Stadium and elsewhere that weekend, the following faces are remembered: Ralph Ardiff, Johnny Davis, Ollie Holmes, Mort Jaquith, Jack Knight, Johnny Laffey, Walt Sherwood, Herm Liss, Jack Gunther, Johnny Quebman, Phil Rising, Dick Sanders, John Dickey, Frank Foster, Chris Born, Squeek Redding, Jack Blair, Dick Barrett, Johnny Cornhelsen, A1 Finlay, Henry Sharpe, Allah Lovejoy, Inches Pierce, Walter McQuiston, Paul Woodbridge. There were probably many more, but the program on which the names were jotted was lost in the ensuing melee! One fellow who wasn't there was Dr.Bartlett Hicks Stoodley, associate professor of sociology at Wellesley, recently appointed visiting lecturer in sociology at Wheaton College, Norton, Mass. Bart, who is author of numerous legal and sociological papers, got his LL.B. at Harvard and practiced law before taking up the study of sociology at Harvard Graduate School where he received his Ph.D. in 1948.
Bob Walsh writes: "Believe it or not, my third son was born on October 8, in the Northern Westchester Hospital, Mount Kisco, N. Y. This makes the first Walsh boy born above the Mason and Dixon Line, but in spite of the fact that he is a Yankee, we are pretty proud of him. I may not have been anywhere near in the running on the Class Baby, but I imagine I am doing pretty well in any competition for having the newest and youngest in the Class."
Thanks to Stan Piatt, we have a report on current doings of the only three '29ers in Minneapolis: Stanley, himself, Art Buffington and Herb Bissell:
"Art, his wife and two sons will participate in the 1929 reunion. He will also attend the graduation of one son from Dartmouth and anticipate the entrance of another next fall. And in the process he, himself, will graduate from the Rutgers School of Banking. He is now an assistant vice president at the First National Bank in Minneapolis. The son who will be graduating from Dartmouth next spring plans to continue in Hanover at Thayer School of Engineering.. .. Unfortunately Herb Bissell and I may not be able to make it to the reunion. I had planned to go, but find that my oldest son graduates from Blake School on the 15th and I must be in Washington, D. C., for the annual assembly of the United World Federalists the following week. The result is that I must give up the reunion. After 25 years it would be nice to be able to stop and look back with the gang with whom we built so many close associations, but in my case looking forward to the future of my boy and to a more peaceful world will have to come first. . . . Herb Bissell has the same problem. His oldest daughter graduates from high school at about the same time as the reunion. Herb also has another daughter, and both are charming young ladies. .. . Herb is a busy man happily employed with Minneapolis Honeywell as their director of merchandising. He has iust completed supervision of the production of a film of the Minneapolis Lakers (basketball team) for use in Minneapolis Honeywell merchandising meetings. Herb and I send greetings to those friends and classmates with whom we would much prefer to visit with personally at the reunion."
We are still hoping that all three of our "Minneapolians" will be able to make it on our 25th if for no other reason than a little well-deserved divertissement.
Charlie Goldsmith, assistant managing director of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures,Ltd., in England gives us a glimpse into contemporary doings of him and his family andsays:
"Life here is most interesting even though I am kept busy every- minute. This job carries many social obligations with it so there is never a dull moment. My two boys are at boarding schools here and seem to have adapted themselves quite well. The older one (13 in December) sounds like a real Englishman already. He has to translate some of the lingo for me at times. The younger one (10 on October 6) is already studying Latin and French. Rugby and soccer are the fall games, and, of course, cricket in the spring. Last week we had an alumni gathering of eight ranging from 19.11 to 1952 classes —to celebrate Dartmouth Night. Sent John Dickey a cable."
An announcement appearing in the BostonSunday Globe tells that Eddie Phelps has been appointed superintendent of the Rutland County Southwest District, which includes schools in Poultney, Clarendon, Ira, Wells and Middletown, Vt. Eddie, who for the past two years was superintendent of schools in the Lamoille County North District, was formerly principal of Windsor High School, assistant principal and head of the English Department at Springfield High School, and principal of the two-year high school and elementary school at Quechee.
Karl Michael has good reason to be proud of the prowess exhibited by his son, Dave, with the Kimball Union varsity football team. As quarterback and co-captain, Dave showed outstanding performance at KUA's campaign against Rents Hill School, which resulted in a decisive 36-6 victory for Kimball Union.
Arthur B. H. Rose of Newbury, Mass., writes from Ankara, Turkey, where he has been since last September, that he is enjoying life over there. An assignment for AndersonNichols Company of Boston finds Art at such a far-away post which involves a management engineering contract with the Turkish State Railways & Ports Administration for the creation of new wage systems and training of Turkish personnel in the techniques of job evaluation and wage administration. Son Ronald '52 completed his second year at Thayer School and received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering last June.
Dick Eberline has taken a job as general manager of the Syncro Corporation, manufacturer of magnetic and electronic devices and located just outside of Detroit. Dick had been with the C. M. Hall Lamp Co. for the past eleven years.
Harry Wallace has been elected president of Wheel Trueing Tool Co. of Canada, Ltd., subsidiary of the Wheel Trueing Tool Co. of Detroit, with whom he has been associated as vice president and general manager for many years.
