Many of us during these winter months have packed up the car and the family and have gone off on one or more skiing weekends, only to have our appetites whetted for more of the same. Henry Stein went through the same experiences when, over a course of several years, he, Marge and his three daughters would take off from their home in Highland Park, Ill., from time to time for a holiday at the skiing paradise of Aspen, Colo. After a few such expeditions, they decided upon a small ranch of their own which would provide a vacation cabin for them. But the attractions of the West became so magnetic that, during this last year, they reversed the arrangements. Red Butte Ranch in Aspen is now their family headquarters and, on occasion, they take side trips from there, except that, from the business standpoint, Henry finds it necessary to spend about two weeks out of six in Chicago. All of the Steins are enthusiastic addicts of Aspen with all of the outdoor attractions which it affords and Henry uses nothing short of superlatives in describing the community as a place to live. His enthusiasm has resulted in his becoming President of the Aspen Chamber of Commerce and, as might be expected, he is devoting a great deal of thought and energy to its problems. Aside from the beauties of the country and the economics of the ranching and resort businesses, Henry is most enthusiastic about the people of the community. Notwith-standing that the Steins now consider themselves Westerners, their eldest daughter Mary Helen is obtaining an Eastern college preparation at Ethel Walker School. Henry says that from the very beginning of the ski development in Aspen there has always been a steady attendance of Thirtymen and he hopes that they will all say hello when they come out to Aspen. In December Henry reported that:

"Last week our illustrious and very modest classmate Bob McClory and his attractive family spent a few days. They won the award of 'Skiers of the Week' due to their proficiency on the slopes and all round good sportsmanship. Bob looks younger than a man of his responsibilities need look and his wife and children are reason for pride."

A picture of Fred Page appeared in the January 15 New York Times and other metropolitan papers of that date when it was announced that he had been elected a Vice President of the Broad Street Investing Corporation and National Investors Corporation, two mutual funds. Fred will continue as here- to fore as a Vice President of Tri-Continental Corporation, the largest of the closed-end investment companies with which these two mutual funds are associated. He is also a director of Brooklyn Union Gas Company and a trustee of the Irving Savings Bank. ... "Bense" Benson leads an interesting and active life in running a copper mine in the hills of Vermont as Vice President, Treasurer and Manager of Vermont Copper Co., South Strafford, Vt. Bense and his wife Louise and their two children, Birger, age 9, and Kristina, age 2, have their home in Sharon, Vt.. .. The Boston metropolitan papers recently carried feature articles and pictures of Al Marsters who had accepted the appointment as Chairman of the 1953 Massachusetts Easter Seal compaign, heading that drive for the Bay State Society.... It was mighty pleasant, after a lapse of many years, again to hear from Walt Johnston who is located in Pleasant Ridge, Mich., and who says that for the past 15 years his business has been that of a Manufacturers' Agent. Time certainly marches on with the report that his son W. Rex, III is 25 years old and married, that his son Robert is 23 years old and is a Junior at Michigan State College and that his daughter Sharon is 10 years old. It was nice to hear from you, Walt, and we hope you will keep the lines open from now on.

The waters of Marblehead Harbor are well known to all sailing enthusiasts, and the Corinthian Yacht Club is equally well known. 1930 should be proud of the fact that JohnWhipple was recently elected Secretary of "Corinthian," and although he does not participate in the Cup Defender classes, John is an active sailor. ... Clint Ahem and Lollie have only recently returned from a vacation in Mexico where each of them had the pleasant experience of hooking (and landing) a sail fish at the same time, - a true double... . Memorial Fund Chairman Hank Embree stopped off in New York and Boston on his way to Hanover for the mid-winter Alumni Council meetings and Herb Chase and your Secretary had the opportunity of spending a most pleasant evening with him during his stop-over in Boston.

Congratulations are certainly in order for Jack Garland who was recently elected a Vice President of The First National Bank of Boston. This promotion is certainly a recognition of the work that Jack has been doing and his standing in the banking community in Boston. ... With thanks to his wife Page, who has been a steady correspondent over a number of years, we can report that on December 1 Bob Blanchard left South Windsor, Conn., and an 11-year association with Hamilton Standard Propellers to take on a new job in Alexandria, Va. Page neglected to advise us of the new concern with which Bob is affiliated, however, she has promised to send us their new home address when they have such in Virginia, so that your Secretary can make all reasonable assurances that this further information will be forth coming.

There has been an increasing interest on the part of all '30 families in the younger generation and in their schooling. Frank Ryder, who is associated with the Division of Industrial Corporations at M.I.T. in Cambridge, has a daughter Joan who, as recipient of a scholarship from the Winsor School, is studying for ten months at the Sorbonne, having spent the Christmas holidays in England at London and Oxford and plans to go to Italy during the spring vacation. Frank confesses that Dorothy, Sally and he can usually be found weekends at Woods Hole, where Frank was previously located for sometime in connection with the Oceanographic Institute....

Fred Jaspersen, who now lives in Chevy Chase, Md., reports that his daughter Jane is a member of the Class of 1956 at Smith. It would be interesting to know how many 1930 daughters are now in attendance at Smith. Brad Cornell's daughter Linda is also a member of the Class of 1956 at Smith as we reported in our last notes.

Please keep your Secretary informed of what is happening to you and your family. Your classmates are interested in keeping in touch with you.

Secretary, 1 Federal St., Boston 10, Mass. Treasurer, 56 Jennys Lane, Barrington, R. I.
