Who can forget those cool and misty mornings? It even gets that way out here in Minnesota, and about now, we're chopping the ice out of the pond for some last shots at the ducks. Before you start thinking about how much you're going to eat at Thanksgiving, relax with us for a moment, -while we venture into the past for some newsworthy events.
"Slugger" Ray Lindquist hit the print early this spring when he smashed out three home runs in a period of only twenty innings of play for the Bingham ton Triplets. Ray has been chasing the diamond at San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Kansas, York and Wichita, and now Binghamton, and we certainly wish him lots of success.
As long as we're passing out the happy handshake we should pat Bill Birkenmeier on the back for his engagement to Sandra Stanley of Cedar Court, N. J. Last we heard, an August wedding was planned, so by now it is certainly a postnuptial affair. Judy Gilmore, hailing from Peabody, N. J., took herself a husband this past June and guess who he is? He's our own Tom Hatchett. After a Simmons College course and one at Mass. General Hospital School of Nursing Judy was a graduate nurse at the University of Colorado Medical School. Someone told us. Tom has been in the Army in Germany for a couple of years, and that they are now residing in San Francisco. It is always wonderful to hear of success or honor being achieved by one of our kind - and this spring it came to John Marshall, who was presented with the William Osier award for exemplifying the intangible qualities that mark the good physician. The award was made by the Mass. Medical Society — John received his degree from Tufts in June, where he was president of his class and the student council.
Jefferson City, Mo., was the scene of the uniting of Julia Dalton and Dr. John Hyland on June 25. By now, John is probably on the high seas with the Navy. It was good to hear that Reed Badgley was on hand in usher's character for Vince Marriott's wedding to Isabel Singer in April. The wedding took place in Fair Haven, N. J., and the Mrs. schooled at Skid-town. Getting back to the Medical graduates, prolific as they seem, we find Steve Biddle, who got his M.D. from Tufts in June. Steve is now interning at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Sometime this summer, Howie Reed packed up his belongings, snatched a degree from the Univ. of Minn. Hospital Administration School and headed down to Fairmont, Minn., to put a floundering hospital back in the ranks of a modern and progressive institution. Here's hoping that Howie, Torry, and their little girl will have some good pheasant shooting lined up for us this fall. Herb Sorenson and John Ross both got medical degrees this summer, Herb from New York HospitalCornell Medical College and John from the same place. Herb will be interning at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N. Y., and John at Johns Hopkins. John Per-Lee did more of the same at the same school, and is now interning at the Univ. of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. We just can't seem to run out of medics, and another one it was a great pleasure to see this summer was Dr. TomArnold. Tom graduated from medical school and is now interning in Chicago.
Back in the nuptial vein, Union Hills, N. C., last spring saw Johnny Sutton and Betty Pratt married. We are pleased to hear that JimCulberson and Pete Frederick donned the usher's garb to guide the guests to their seats and to make sure John and Betty got off to a rip-snorting honeymoon. Congratulations are in store for Ben Hurd and Virginia Kuzia. The details haven't penetrated this tar west, however; the marriage was to have taken place September 3rd. John is with General Electric at their business training plant in Fitchburg, Mass. Also tripping down the light fantastic in June was Will Jones who said "I do" to Suzanne Bowman. The wedding was a big New Hampshire and Vermont affair and the young couple is living in Boston, where Will is an underwriter for the Boston Insurance Co.
Speaking of Boston, it's good to hear that old Joe Welch is still eating baked beans, and we also note that Joe has taken over the coaching of the Governor Dummer racket squad - tennis, that is. Joe, of course, hit a mean ball on the Hanover Plain, and also was captain of the team at Dummer for two years. Just to make the tale complete, Joe is still an insurance broker with Chase & Lunt, Inc. The month of July in Rochester, N. Y., saw the arrival of a shiny new face in the family of Dr. and Mrs. Edgar Miller. The arrival was a boy, which makes it one of each for the Millers. Johnny Ferguson took time out from his graduate work at Columbia to take a bride. She is none other than Nancy Bauer from Franklin, Mass. Nancy earned her degree at Mt. Holyoke, while we were hitting the books in Hanover. At last report, the Fergusons were calling New York their home.
Wheeling and dealing recently was DonKlinck. Don, with several other associates, took over an old and venerable insurance agency in East Haddam, Conn.
Dick Kahn and Harriet Serlick went right ahead and plunged off the deep end in Portland, Maine, back in Maytime. Into the usher's suit slipped Don Gold and Bob Sirkin. Harriet calls Deering High School, Westbrook Junior College and Boston University her alma maters. She is assistant librarian at Northeastern University in Boston. Dick, of course, is interning at the Mass. Memorial Hospital in Beantown.
Congratulations are in store for David Masters Olney, who arrived on August 4 in New York. The proud parents are Julie and NadiaOlney. The underground reports that Jackand Mary Hodgson, with their 214-year-old ball of fire son, are at the Teachers College at Columbia.
Any of you in the local Cincinnati area in the near future might possibly be able to catch one of the greatest orgies ever to take place in that city. Call Ted Eberle, because he's getting married soon. Pete Bogardus, who has never been known to turn down a few snifters, is coming all the way from California for the event. Reportedly, Hunter White, who hasn't been heard from since his trip to Minneapolis and then his marriage, will grace the event with his presence. And just to be sure there won't be any alcohol left in town, we'll send down Bush and MacFarland for the event. Ted, we certainly hope you make it!
Too many days traveling prevented us from doing too much work on last month's column. However, the good wife pitched in and did the job. If there's any repetition, please bear with us. Child number three is due in December, and as we go to press this month, the hair is getting a little bit gray, the wallet thin, but we're all having a hell of a lot of fun.
