Male members of '09 aren't the only ones who get honors heaped on their heads. In the Worcester Sunday Telegraph of October 28, a front page story proclaimed the news that Mrs. William A. Loughlin had been chosen "Catholic Woman of the Year" by the League of Catholic Women. She will serve as honorary chairman of the league's Seventh Diocesan Congress next May 3-4.
Our classmate, Bill Loughlin, known as "Silk" in undergraduate days, has never talked much about himself or his family. Facts are that his little woman, who is described as "attractive, gray-haired and quiet spoken," was a school teacher before she married Bill 35 years ago. They have two children, Bill Jr., who's a reporter for the Gardner (Mass.) News, and a daughter, Mother Sara Loughlin of the Order of Our Lady of the Retreat in the Cenacle.
Bill, a successful lawyer in Gardner, was graduated from Harvard Law in 1912. Among his public offices were city solicitor for Gardner and assistant district attorney at Worcester. The Loughlins live in an attractive eightroom Colonial house at 140 Cherry Street, Gardner. This must have been the family residence for over 22 years, for it was Bill's address at the time of our 25th. Thanks are due to Howard Cowee '08, for this information.
Mystery Men Identified
A number of men have written me about the two guys in the Psi U picture whose identities were uncertaiir. First to respond was Dr. Henry Vietz who said that wasn't his phiz, but that of Bob Stoughton, '12. This was confirmed by Warren Agry '11, George Geiser '12, and Page Junkins '14, so it must be so. As Page said, "Bob died much too soon - in 1921 of TB. He and I carried on a regular correspondence, not only while he was at Hartford, but when he was a patient at Saranac. Never did he complain nor become pessimistic — a grand guy who fought gamely, only to lose".
Warren Agry also identified the guy in the back row next to Eddie Keeler as Fordham Clark (Put) Russell '12, who's located in Pittsburgh, Pa.
George Geiser minded the time when he, Toe Brusse, Rollie Hastings 'n, and I got off the train at White River Junction, his first September morn as a freshman, and walked with us to Hanover. He later went Beta which was Joe Brusse's frat and that of other good 'opers — Danny Watson, K.nuck Kennedy, Norm Catharin, Cad Cummings, Al Newton, Proc Perley, Billie Ruhe, Joe Hatch, Hal Pratt, and Bob Bruce. These incidents sure bring back the memories, eh kiddies?
Quick Summary of Items
This is the issue o£ the MAGAZINE when Editor Charlie Widmayer says to "terse it up" because lists of contributors to the 1956 Alumni Fund are printed with the notes from each class.
Rev. Hollis M. Bartlett has resigned as pastor of the Lake View Congregational Church, Worcester, Mass., effective December 31, after nearly 30 years of service. The church membership voted, and he accepted the post of pastor emeritus of the church after his retirement date. Hollis is considered the "dean" of the Protestant clergy in Worcester. His life has been fruitful.
The jobs of Class Agent and Bequest Chairman have been assigned to Gordon Weinz and Mike Farley, respectively. More details about these two dignitaries will appear in the January issue.
From Secretary Bertie French comes word that colored slides of various classmates in sundry poses have been coming in, and that the shots taken at Wilbur Bull's estate last June turned out well. These slides will be shown at class gatherings.
Other items from Bertie: Jonah Newton is laid up with a coronary and complications. (Take it easy, Jonah, and get over it like Mike Readey did.) ... Merrill Follansbee reports that he's in good health.... Bertie and his better half, Hazel, have had their usual busy summer and fall.... Class dues are coming in, but a fuller complement of payees will be welcome ....Big Chief Meyers from out California way has been heard from. Nice going, Chief, how's about putting in an appearance at our informal reunion next June?
A letter from Curly Blake gave news of the death o£ Louis Wright's wife in Brockton, Mass., on October 2. Our sympathy to Louis who is still laid up with a sickness that has confined him to bed for a couple of years. Curly said that he and wife Sarah headed for St. Petersburg on October 5, expecting to stay there for the winter until next May or June.
The two cronies, Ben Dudley and Dr. BillHolzer of Rochester, N. Y. and Worcester, Mass., were at Hanover with their fraus last October. They stopped at the Hanover Inn. This should give Prof. Andy Scarlett '10 an opportunity to make a crack about wheeling 'em around the campus in their wheel chairs.
B. Matthew Scully and his patient little woman Ethel celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last June with a special anniversary mass said by their son, Father Bernard Scully. Congrats to the blushing couple.
Cully Pierce '07, from his hide-away at Littlebrook Farm, Jaffrey Center, N. H., says he makes all the decisions in his household, but to tell the absolute truth, they're not allet's
have some decisions out of you birds to send in news items to your perspiring editor. Accept our wishes for a right Merry Christmas and a snappy and healthy New Year. Lana, the glamour puss, says to say hello.
