Some interesting news this month concerns Berl Bernhard, who's been delving into the intricacies of transportation law with the Washington, D. C., law firm of Turney & Turney.

We hear that on November 3, Berl became general attorney of the new Federal Civil Rights Commission, with responsibility for preparing and participating in hearings coming up where the Civil Rights Act has been violated. We wish him the best of luck, and sadly fear that he has his work cut out for him.

There's also word this month of one of the more important events of the fall social season in St. Louis. As Al Karcher tells it,

Capt. Ace Mueller was passing through St. Louis last weekend, and managed to fit me into his complex social schedule. Of course, we reft deeply honored here in St. Louis that he would stop. Since I am only holding the rank of first balloon in the Air Force, Ace used his rank, and forced me to shine his shoes as soon as lie gave me "at ease."

Al goes on to say that St. Louis has it all over his stint with Kodak in Lubbock, Texas, partially because, "I occasionally manage to sponge a drink off my friend Hap living in the adjacent and exclusive suburb of Clayton."

Jim and Dorrie Balderston do live in the nicest places. Dorrie writes a card to say they've been transferred from Williamstown, Mass., but landed in Concord, N. H., and will welcome Dartmouth folk in their pretty new home on Gould Hill Road, Hopkinton, N. H.

A news clipping tells us that Bud Lang has been placed in charge of the business development department for six offices of the National Newark and Essex Banking Co. in the Newark area, and it sounds like a big step up. And John Ives, now assistant director of Grace-New Haven Community Hospital in New Haven, has recently become a part-time instructor in office management at Quinnipiac College.

Us '51s are still marrying all over the landscape. Wes Blake pens a note from Stockholm to say that "my time in Sweden has not been completely confined to studying glaciers and visiting Spitsbergen - this letter brings the news of my recent engagement to Ingrid Olsson of Stockholm," a grad student in geography and geology at the University of Stockholm. Wes says he plans to come back stateside this month to finish up his doctorate at Ohio State, then return to Sweden to be married.

We also hear of the engagement of FranzPick to Helen Mahler of Scarsdale, a 1958 Smith grad. And Dr. Aaron Rausen writes to say that he'll be married Dec. 25 to Ruth Berman of Brooklyn, a recent graduate of Sarah Lawrence. Aaron adds that after NYU Med. School, some time in pediatrics at Bellevue and in the Army, he's now chief resident in pediatrics at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City and plans to start private practice next summer.

From Washington comes the word that Dr. John Ross and Helen Warren were married Sept. 23 at Andrews Air Force Base, Md. Dausthter of an Air Force colonel, Helen Graduated from Rockford College and is doing graduate work at American University, John is doing research at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md.

Dick Ellis reports from Wethersfield, Conn., that he and Susie were host to Sam and Nancy Roberts and clan of Philadelphia for Yale weekend. The whole houseful of kids, six I think, went trick-and-treatmg Friday night, and for once the Saturday game was a pleasure for their mamas and papas. Dick also mentions that he was elected to the Wethersfield School Board last spring, and is up to his ears in the familiar problems of where to put 'em all next year.

And also from Connecticut, we hear that Tim and Barbara Lowell of Canton became the parents of third child - and first girl - Jennifer, earlier this fall. Another recent birth brought daughter Maud Carol to Aldan and Sue Markson in September. And Nelson Bellesheim writes from Paramus, N. J., to say that Betty presented him with Douglas Keith, fifth child and second son, on their Oct. 18 wedding anniversary.

I " Another proud papa is Ben Sykes, of Norwood, Mass., who says that Bernard George III has come along and "Terry and I are most happy."

Ben also mentions a recent get-together with Fred Brown and wife and Joe Caldwell, and frequent chats with Line Fenno who's managing a department store directly across the street from the Sykes Norwood law office.
