Sunday, November 2, a bright clear day after the rain and wind that pelted the some 50,000 in the Bowl yesterday when the Big Green forces really pulled one out of the bag to tie Yale ten seconds before the end of the game. Had planned to be there to cheer on the boys but the flu bug hit the family and we all stayed home to listen to the game on the radio. Had a feeling during the first half that this was not going to be our day — Yale seemed to be up for this one and we had trouble moving when it really counted. We'll still win the Ivy title, however, as Yale will knock off Princeton and so will we. How's that for going out on a limb — don't sue me if it doesn't materialize!
Congratulations go to Johnny Sheldon on his recent promotion to the Presidency of Charles A. Stevens Co., large Chicago women's apparel store, with branches in La-Grange Park and Hubbard Woods. John was formerly vice-president of the company and during the last year was elected Chairman of the State Street Council. John and his family live in Highland Park, Ill.
Marv Chandler, president and chief executive officer of the Northern Illinois Gas Co., has been elected vice chairman of the General Management Section of the American Gas Association at the 39th annual AGA convention. Last year, Marv was elected to a two-year term on the Association's Board of Directors.
Tom Curtis, Republican Congressman from Missouri, was the keynote speaker at the University of Dayton's (Ohio) third annual Institute on Federal Taxation. Some 150 attorneys, accountants, investment counsellors and tax executives attended the sessions conducted by 16 nationally recognized authorities.
One of Hollywood's most rugged stars Bob Ryan, is currently one of the five personalities being seen on TV's Goodyear Theater series, "A Turn of Fate," along with David Niven, Charles Boyer, Jack Lemmon and Jane Powell. During his Hollywood career, Bob has dodged the trap of typecasting and has appeared as a school teacher, a killer, a priest, a playboy, a bigot, a millionaire and a lunatic. In the new series, Bob will play both the "heavy" and the romantic leads in a succession of roles which should prove to be as varied as his screen successes. I know you will all be looking in to "A Turn of Fate."
A note from one of my newshawks, Howie Sargeant, reveals that Mike Isaacs, special counsel for the SEC in Washington since '947. has joined the law firm of McGoldrick, Dannett, Horowitz and Golub located at 3 East 54th St. in New York City. Mike and his family are settling in White Plains. Howie also reports receiving a note from Carl Baker in which he wrote: "Weather mainly good. We have a British Ford now and are exploring further afield." Carl, as you know, is at New College, Oxford, on a Fulbright Fellowship and is living at 28 St. Margaret's Road, Oxford. Ye old secretary would certainly like to receive a letter from the good professor! Carl's review of Leslie Marchand's three-volume biography of Byron was the front page story of the New York Times Book Review section on Oct. 20.
Now for a few "quickies" - Red Tucker's picture appeared in an ad for the Liberty National Bank and Trust Co. of Oklahoma City, of which he is vice president and a director. ... Bill Morton is one of the nominees for the vice-presidency of the Investment Bankers Association of America. The Association will act on the slate at its annual convention in Hollywood, Fla., the beginning of December. Good luck to you, Bill! Howie Pierpont, second vice president, Equitable Life Assurance Society, has written a well-re-ceived article - "The Expanding Group Insurance Market" for the Eastern Underwriter, a trade publication.
So much for now - A very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to each and everyone of you and yours!
