My only complaint I haven't enough space for all the news. So let's jump in head first and quickly.
Had lunch with Moe Frankel recently. His travels as director of the Joint Council on Economic Education take him all over the country but so busy and hurried that he never gets a chance to see any of his friends. He does correspond with Lou Grosenbaugh who is in the U. S. Forestry Service. I reminded Moe that if it hadn't been for him (with an assist from Cuddy Flint) Lou and the group from East Orange High, Bob Douglass and GrovieBlood would have won the plaque our freshman year for the highest grades. Also gleaned from Moe that Jim Ballard is living in the same apartment development as do GeorgeCopp and Marjorie. George opened the champagne to celebrate the announcement of his being admitted to a partnership in the Wall Street banking firm of Wood, Struthers.
Let's drink a toast to the following mates: To Dr. Bill Emerson who has joined American Potash & Chemical Corp. as manager of research at the company's Whittier, Cal. research laboratory. Bill was formerly with Monsanto Chemical Co. at St. Louis as assistant development director. He received his doctorate at M.I.T. in 1937 and taught at the University of Illinois from 1938 to 1941. To Bill Haist, the new vice-president of Detroit Controls Corp., a 94-year-old valve-producing concern. Bill's daughter Linda is studying at Skidmore and his son David attends Kent School. Bill is active in political and civic affairs in Easton and was formerly chairman of the Republican Town Committee. Now is a member of Black Rock Yacht Club and the University Club.
To lecturer John Roberts, Research Manager in the Engineering Department of E. I. du Pont de Nemours. In keeping with the times John is an authority on machine computers and the solution by mathematical approach of complex problems and even complete chemical processes. Having majored in Physics, he received his M.S. from M.I.T. and has addressed the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Two kudos to Stan Karstedt and to Matt Korol. Stan has been promoted to assistant manager of bulk sales for Continental Oil Co. with headquarters in Houston. Welcome to the Cork Club and have a drink with Dave Hedges, Bob Goecke, and John Wolf, on us. The clipping about Stan appeared in the oil capital's "Tulsa Tribune" even though Stan has been in the New York City area since 1953. As for Matt he recently became plant manager of the Edwards Division of Bates Manufacturing Co. He left us in 1932 to study textiles at Lowell Textile and M.I.T. He and Louise have three children, Stefanie, Deborah and Bill. Speaking of plant managers, Jim Dunn, the one and only of the U.S. Steel's American Bridge division, had his picture in all the Pennsylvania papers on the occasion of his promotion.
Our wandering reporter and merry correspondent, Bud Yallalee, is now signed up with N.B.C. and working for them in a merchandising capacity. If any of you missed Bud in his two year whirlwind tour of the country you must have been out of town that day. It took Marg and Ray Vickland several weeks to regain their normal pace after one memorable evening with Mandarin Yallalee. Bud is under the impression that Fred Robbe has a new job as advertising manager for American Home Foods.
An anonymous but very welcome note informs me that Chuck Cotsworth, vice-president of American Automobile Insurance Co., is now a member of the Board of Directors of American Insurance Co.
This is a month of contrition for me. Last time in mentioning our latest editions in the children's group I neglected to congratulate Marcia and Frank Parmelee whose first child William Dodd will be a year old this June 22nd. Pop, in charge of foreign operations for Toledo Scales, gets around. Four trips to Europe last year. He claims this isn't as tough as it sounds because they are real quick visits. Many of us with our roots firmly embedded would gladly change places for a year or two with you, Frank.
More penitent feelings because some time ago I received a nice note from Lex Paradis and never had space to print it. He was in the process of selling his house in Katonah, New York and buying one in Westport, Connecticut. The move would help his commuting and he hoped to find better schools for the children. Steven is ready for college next year
and Joel and Andrea not long afterwards. Lex is Assistant Secretary at American Airlines in charge of corporate work which includes stock transfer, shareholder relations, and handling matters pertaining to Directors and Stockholders meetings. As if this were not enough he is security officer for the company with respect to corporate security matters and works with the Department of Defense. GailRaphael you remember is the master-mind behind the wonderful American Airlines ads that are instrumental in causing them to carry more passengers than any other airline in the world.
A letter comes from the Civilian Personnel Officer of the Army's Quartermaster Research and Development Center - none other than Henry Rose. Hank and family, consisting of red-headed wife Mary, and red-headed daughter Deborah, have returned to Natick, Mass. after a dozen years in Washington, D. C. His article on the shortage of engineers and scientists and what Natick is doing about it appeared in the Journal of the Society for Personnel Administration.
Jack Feth's bulletin (Volume 8) deserves to be reprinted in toto but I shall only tap the high spots. The good doctor has a new assignment in geochemistry of ground water. His office and lab. is in Menlo Park south of San Francisco. This is Pacific area headquarters for the Geological Survey and when fully staffed there will be nearly a thousand survey personnel. Franny closed a year of teaching in Ogden and piled John and Jan into the Big Blue Ox, the Feth 28-foot house trailer, and the whole family spent a rambling vacation in southern Utah, across Nevada into Oregon and down to California. They are now located in a large house in Los Altos with a plum orchard and walnut, almond, pear, apple and peach trees and a jungle of flowers, vines, and shrubs. Jack volunteered to act as a counselor in the Boy Scouts for anyone wanting to earn a merit badge in geology. The District Com- missioner was Capt. W. G. Michelet, U.S.N. (Ret.) Jack discovered that Captain Michelet was one of Bob's three older brothers. Jack's offer was immediately accepted and he has been asked to act as commissioner for cubbing in Los Altos.
Please do me a favor. Take out your pen or pencil and circle the date — June 22 - a Saturday. This is the day Nels Krogslund said we could have a picnic in his Middletown, New York paradise. This year, you and wife and children are all invited. You will be given more and ample notice between now and June by our regional chairmen Dick Gruen (New York), George Copp (New Jersey) and HarryWallace (Connecticut). Bring your lunch and swimming suits and be prepared for a day of fun and frolic. Nels is going to ice the beer which didn't get quaffed last year and there's enough to launch a thousand schooners sweet Helen. Let's get there this time and the more the merrier.
