Activity in the Long Island Alumni Association is on the increase! The Executive Committee is happy to report that more and more of the 900 Dartmouth Long Islanders are taking an active interest in their Club, participating in both functional and social events. Evidence of this fact was clearly demonstrated when over 100 members had the time of their lives at the Valentine's Dance held at The Allison Restaurant on Manhasset's Miracle Mile. The dance turned out to be a great success, with the top orchestra of Buckie Walker being held over until 2:30 in the morning.
It was indeed wonderful to see so many valued members from so many different classes at the dance. Steve Millard '26, Treasurer of the Club, reports that we almost broke even, a huge achievement in itself!
As most Dartmouth Long Islanders already know, the Executive Committee is sponsoring THE TOMAHAWK, a quarterly bulletin giving news of the activities of the Club and its members, in the hope that by constantly keeping the entire alumni body informed, we will have a greater interest on the part of all. Contributions to the bulletin are urgently requested. If you have any newsworthy items concerning fellow members, please mail them to Turner Austin '53, Editor, 29 West Mill Drive, Great Neck, N. Y.
The Annual Meeting of the Long Island Alumni Association was held on May 16 at Felice's Restaurant in Old Westbury, and we are again happy to report that the downstairs meeting room was filled to capacity. President Ted Girault '27 gave a report of the year's events, and upon analysis, it was found that the Club was even more active than most had thought. The Enrollment Committee, under the leadership of Roger Allen '37 and Vince Turecamo '37, had a most active role in the interviewing of prospective Dartmouth men, but perhaps even more important was the increased emphasis put on the recruiting of potentially excellent Dartmouth men. The Club sponsored two large get-togethers of local High School athletes, who heard talks by head football coach Bob Blackman, and saw movies of the past football season. In addition, many boys were personally escorted to Hanover where they had a first-hand look-see of the College. Our hats are off to those alumni who, on their own time, were personally responsible for convincing a good prospect that he should attend Dartmouth.
Steve Millard '26, Treasurer, gave the annual financial report, which showed us to be more than solvent. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that many members had not contributed their annual dues, and a plea was made for them to do so. Steve's report was unanimously accepted.
Social events included a picnic, a beach party, a dance, and numerous small get-togethers. This year even more events are planned.
The slate of next year's officers was presented and unanimously accepted by those present. The new President for the year 1957-1958 is Roland R. Hummel Jr., '42. Roland has been active in Club affairs for many years. The Nominating Committee felt quite strongly that he would be extremely well qualified to head the Association during a year of planned expansion and greatly increased activity.
Proposed and accepted as First Vice President was John J. O'Connor Jr., '41; Second Vice President, Robert S. Darbee Jr., '41; Secretary, G. Turner Austin '53; Assistant Secretary, Arthur M. Keleher '54; Treasurer, Norman Falkin '47; Executive Committee (3 years), Guy B. Bostwick '27; Herman S. Goodman '32; John B. Wolff Jr., '32; Stephen H. Millard '26; Executive Committee (1 year), Robert F. Jarbeau '36.
THE TOMAHAWK has announced the big social event of the summer, and although another notice will be sent to all Dartmouth Long Islanders a couple of weeks in advance as another reminder, we again take pleasure in announcing the annual beach party at Gilgo Beach, to be held on Sunday, June 23. We can't help emphasize enough that this all-day affair is strictly for Dartmouth men, their guests, and their entire families. The cost is nominal and the fun is phenominal. This fact can be attested to by all those who have attended previous outings. This is one event that we have no trouble in getting people to come to. Our problem is to convince those members who have never been to one o£ our beach parties that they are truly "the greatest." The only way they'll ever find out is by coming. You who have already been, can do your fellow members a great favor by getting them to come along with you. Form your own parties. Come by yourselves. Bring your best girl, wife, and children. But do come.
SEE YOU THERE!
