Hi everyone and welcome back to the '53 corner! Let's quickly turn the clock back a bit and pick up where we left off in June on the activities of many of us.
First, a salute to the Class for its continued outstanding record in the annual alumni fund drive. This year the final tally shows us up at the top again in total contributions and number of contributors. This record is due in great part to the unselfish and effective efforts of Ted Spiegel, Head Class Agent, and his strong group of agents who seem to have that "never give up" spirit that spells success. Our hats are off to you guys who serve us and the College.
Allen, Johnson, and Carpenter arc the names that make the engagement headlines. In June, Byron Allen announced his engagement to Mabel Ann Wynne of Coral Gables, Fla., and is planning an early fall wedding. Mabel graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College and is presently a graduate student at Columbia. After Dartmouth and Tuck, Byron served a tour with the Navy and is now associated with the New York City investment banking firm of Shields & Co. Ken Johnson will take Jean Knox of Gardner, Mass., as his bride very soon, as will Seth Carpenter take Patricia Holding of Stamford, Conn.
The wedding bells chimed six times for '53 this summer and the couples walking the aisle to answer "I do" were the following: (Dr.) Tom McBride and Alice Marie Aho of Bergenfield, N. J. Alice graduated from Douglass College of Rutgers University and received her master's degree in clothing and textiles from New York University. Tom took his medical training at the University of Vermont and has recently completed his internship at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N. Y. All those visiting our new 50th state may soon find Tom and his bride residing in Hawaii where Tom will be engaged in research with the heart disease control program of the U.S. Public Health Service. Bill Stubbs and Virginia Asker of Westbrook, Me., were joined in marriage June 26. Virginia is a graduate of Gorham State Teacher's College and Bill is an advertising representative of the Guy Gannett Newspapers and will be associated with the Richmond, Va., Times Dispatch and Richmond News Leader.
The following are two unique ceremonies in which both brides were married by their own fathers. Dorothy Gates of New York was given away in marriage and also joined in marriage to Ray Luebbe by her minister father in June. Dorothy received her B.A. degree at the University of Connecticut and her M.A. degree at Smith College. Ray holds his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and is employed as a research chemist for DuPont. (Dr.) Al Sessler traveled to Texas to cut his wedding cake with (Dr.) Martha Anne Smith of Hitchcock, Texas. The bride's father also officiated at this wedding. Martha ob- tained her doctor's degree at the University of Texas Medical School and proudly hangs her credentials next to Al's Tufts Medical School degree. After a trip to Yellowstone Park, the Sesslers settled in Illinois where Al is stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital as a Lieutenant. The Trianon Room of the Sheraton East Hotel in New York was the scene of Fred Dorkin's marriage to Harriette Ann Garfinkel of Trenton, N. J., in June. Fred received his law degree from Duke University and is now in the office of the Judge Advocate General at Fort Dix, N. J. Helen is an alumna of the University of Michigan. Out on Long Island on August 8, Bob Yates and Barbara May Blackman were united. The bride is a graduate of New York State Teachers College and Bob went on to Medill School of Journalism of Northwestern after Dartmouth. He is now Fredonia, N. Y., bureau chief of the Dunkirk, N. Y., Evening Observer. Congratulations from all of us to all of you, and welcome to the Dartmouth group, gals!
