Dartmouth's varsity cross country runners are finding the going rough this season, particularly with their toughest contests early in the season. To date the harriers have been blanked by both Manhattan and Brown, 15-50, in dual meets and have finished third behind Yale and Columbia in a triangular meet.
To date Captain Mike Nolen and Roger Coates have been Dartmouth's top runners, with Don Smith, Bob Becker and Ed Berkowitz rated behind them. Injuries have sidelined veterans Tom Lennox and Art Pritchard and this has caused Coach Ellie Noyes some problems, since depth has been a major factor this fall. Other members of the varsity squad include Bruce Henry, Mike Kistler, Steve Merrill, Dick Nau and Fred Schwab.
Although Dartmouth's varsity is relatively weak this year, the freshman cross country squad is regarded as one of the most promising in some time. To date the '62 runners have won a triangular meet against Yale and Columbia and dropped Brown in a dual meet. Tom Laris, a school boy distance whiz and record-holder, is the best of a strong group and is already being compared to Doug Brew and other great Dartmouth distance runners. However, freshmen like Dan Tompkins, Clark Billings, Nick Jennison and Dud Hallagan are giving Laris some good competition and these five will be a real asset to the varsity next year. Other freshman squad members include Gieg Hargrett, Carl Herbold, lan Lange, Bill Obenshain, Kent Slaby, Tom Weaver and Tom Young, and this so-called "second division" provides strong backing for the front runners.
