The flip of the calendar on September 1, marked the beginning of our 34th year. The Club's social season began on Dartmouth Night. Friday, October 3, with a tea dance. One hundred members, more or less, trod on their ladies' toes, all to the haunting strains of Les Lannin's drum and bugle corps, and no tea was served. It was the best attended Dartmouth Night in a score of years, due. no doubt to the Club's new policy of curbing the homeward-bound husband by inviting his wife to meet him in town.
Through the inspiration and under the guidance of Carl Ray '37, a series of monthly talks, "A Philosophy For The Future," began on November 5. The series will consist of informal chats by prominent Dartmouth men on the personal philosophies to which they feel they owe their success, together with their frank appraisal of the future of their particular field and of business in general.
The first speaker, Sigurd S. Larmon '14, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Young & Rubicam, appeared before some 75 members in the Club library and talked with conviction about the responsibilities of corporations to the public, to their employees and to their stockholders. He also pointed out the differences between the picture of the advertising business painted in recent books and articles, and the picture as it really is. In so doing, he stated that Madison Avenue is not a glamour street, but a business street, that the advertising business is one of the most intriguing, challenging and exciting of all professions and, as in other businesses, success comes when responsibility is met and met well. Following his talk, Sig spent another three-quarters of an hour in a pleasant and informative question-and-answer session with the members.
Future talks in the series will be given by: Josh Davis '27, President, Blair & Company, on December 3; George Champion '26, President, Chase-Manhattan Bank, on January 7; Orvil Dryfoos '34, President, New York Times, on February 4; Bob Oelman '31, President, National Cash Register, on March 4; and Courtney Brown '26, Dean, Columbia Business School, on April 1.
The season's next social event, under the guidance of the Entertainment Chairman, Dek Davidson '52, and his Vice Chairman, Nels Ehinger '52, will be the annual Christmas Tea Dance for members, their wives and guests on December 17. Class dinners scheduled for the next few weeks: 1916, Dec. 4 and Jan. 8; 1918, Jan. 15; 1934, Jan. 20.
