On December 26 we held our annual luncheon for undergraduates of the Touchdown Club. Although it rained quite hard, over 100 undergrads, alumni, prospective candidates for admission and fathers were in attendance.
Club President, Will Fitch '17, presided and opened the proceedings by introducing a number of those at the head table, including Joe Kiernan '37, President of the Touchdown Club; Judge Clarence Opper '18, Alumni Councilor; General Harry H. Semmer '13, Regional Chairman for the 200 th Anniversary Development Program; Admiral Richard M. Oliver, father of Dick Oliver '61 Bob Lyle '29, Headmaster of Friends School and William Brett '16, Director of the U.S. Mint.
We were then treated to two excellent talks by undergraduates, Dave Segal '60 and Tom Goodridge '61. Both spoke enthusiastiabout current happenings at the College and testified to the invigorating environment of Hanover as a place to attend school.
Main speaker of the day was Richard Jackson 33, Assistant Secretary of the Navy. While he may be remembered by his classmates as an outstanding athlete and campus leader at college, he was also a fine student. And it was his interest in academics which prompted him to comment about the need today for more emphasis on the basic academic disciplines as contrasted with the drive for greater freedom of choice in selecting subjects for study. Certainly this has given us something to ponder in view of the arrival of the space age.
