This is one of those months when no news would be good news. Until JeffFletcher called me to report that DickMonson had been killed in the crash of his Air National Guard jet, I had nothing newsworthy to pass on. Now, unfortunately, I have.
Jeff, who is freshman admissions director at Syracuse University, was Dick's Hanover roommate and frequently saw him and his family in Fabius, N. Y., near Camp Drum.
The day following Jeff's call I had a long letter from Frank McGrath's mother in Dick's hometown of Wakefield, Mass. The McGrath family have been close to the Monsons for many years.
Both Jeff and Mrs. McGrath expressed sentiments which I am sure reflect the feelings of most people who knew Dick well. I did not know Dick that closely at Dartmouth, but I remember the zest with which he did things. And in his short 30 years I am sure that he took much enjoyment in life—just as he made life enjoyable for those near him.
I am indebted to both Jeff and Mrs. McGrath for providing the bulk of the information on Dick's, years since gradution which I have incorporated in the obituary appearing elsewhere in this issue.
We'll miss Dick, among several other premature losses from the Class, when we gather for Reunion next June.
