Equally impressive is the record and progress made by the Big Green lacrosse team, a team which Coach Tom Dent acclaims as "having made more progress than almost any other team I've coached." In the past month the Indians defeated Middlebury 10-0, lost to Cornell 7-5, then dropped Syracuse 11-7, Colgate 12-6, Williams 7-4, Harvard 19-2, and Yale 11-8 before being edged by Princeton in the most recent encounter, 6-5. The losses to Cornell and Princeton, however, cost the Indians a chance for league honors, as both teams are still undefeated. The Indians led Princeton most of the way, but several scoring opportunities, missed in the early periods, proved costly. The game was tied up 5-5 by Princeton late in the final period and then with just 53 seconds remaining Princeton's Captain Hyde tallied to give the Tigers the win. However, on the basis of their win over Yale, the Big Green took the Biggs Trophy, emblematic of the New England Championship, and will probably wind up in third place in the Eastern League behind Cornell and Princeton.
Dartmouth's defense - one of the best in the league with Randy Malin, at goal, Captain Bill Morton, Jon Herriott and Harry Shaw - has been a major factor in the results. Dartmouth's attack line of Jack Patterson, Pat Walsh and Al Munroe showed steady improvement, with Munroe and Patterson battling for scoring honors. Al Rozycki, Ron Wybranowski, Bob Sands and Sam McMurtrie, the Big Green's first mid-field unit, also played well.
