For the third year, on Saturday, July 9, members of the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California held their annual meeting at the home of Ed and Mary Alice Drechsel '36 on Belvedere Lagoon, north of San Francisco. This year the weather didn't cooperate — it was foggy and cold, and the actual meeting was held indoors on the floor in front of the fireplace. Only two or three of the more hardy accepted Ed's invitation for a brisk sail on the lagoon.
The cabin at Donner Summit has had almost continuous use all summer to the great benefit of our treasury. Besides retiring our indebtedness as required, there is still much to do with this money, such as developing a safe and reliable water supply (last winter the well was dry, as were those of several neighbors), an adequate sewage disposal system, completion of the stone chimney, new roofing, and so forth.
Needless to say, there was heavy use of the cabin during the Winter Olympics at nearby Squaw Valley. One of our new members, Lou Lazar '59, who was working at Squaw, made it his headquarters. Following the Olympics we gathered together a sizable group at lunch to meet John Rand '38 and Bill Danforth '41 and hear their impressions of the games.
Our officers for this year are: President, Jack Garfein '21; Vice President, Gene Carver '50; Secretary, Bob Allen '33; Treasurer, Carl Ward '32; Asst. Treasurer, Jack Garfein'21; Directors, Al Grant '43, Fred Springer-Miller '49, Tavey Taylor '28.
