Karl Michael's fine varsity swimming team has added three victories to its record, over Springfield, Army and Columbia, while losing to Navy and Harvard.
Navy started off in fine style in its Hanover meet with the Midshipman 400 medley relay team setting a Spaulding Pool record of 3:58.4, beating a mark set by Colgate a few weeks before. The Midshipmen went on to take the close meet, 52-43. Don Griffin of Navy set another pool record with a clocking of 2:11.0 in the 200-yard individual medley. Al Hale was Dartmouth's only double winner in the 220 and 440-yard freestyle events.
Although Dartmouth took only three firsts out of eleven in its away meet with Springfield, the Indians had the depth to take a 50-45 victory. Individual winners for the Green were Charlie Brown in the 60-yard freestyle and Terry Bentley in the aoo-yard butterfly event.
Bentley and Brown were also outstanding in the Dartmouth triumph over Army by the same margin, 50-45, as they took two first places each. Hale and diver Glen Gemelli were other Dartmouth winners. The 400-yard medley record was broken again, this time by the Dartmouth combination of Bentley, Jay Pierson and Bill Piper as the Indian swimmers overwhelmed Columbia, 69-26, in the Carnival meet.
Harvard invaded Spaulding Pool the next weekend and it was all Harvard, for the Cantabs, ranked with Yale in power this year, captured firsts in ten of the eleven events. Bob Rogers was the lone Indian winner with a strong performance in the soo-yard individual medley. The Harvard 400-yard medley relay group broke the pool record in that event - for the fourth time this season.
