A story that could have been different with a "little bit of luck" is that of the 1961 cross-country team. After its opener with Manhattan, in which captain Tom Laris dropped from heat exhaustion, the team never quite lived up to expectations. It defeated Yale and Columbia in a triangular meet, but then it bowed to Brown, 22-34, and Harvard, 19-39. On November 3, Laris returned to action and the Green defeated Boston University, 20-43, but Laris was fourth and Pete Wells finished second.

On November 11 in New York the Indian harriers entered the Heptagonals. Cornell was the winning team, Army was second, and the Green was eighth. Wells was again the top runner, finishing sixteenth, and Dan Tompkins was seventeenth. Nick Jennison was 46th, Jeff Burnham 47th, and Laris 56th.
