Word has been received of the death of Karl Brackett, in Duxbury, Mass., on Oct. 10, after a long but mercifully painless illness. He was compelled for financial reasons to drop out of college but returned later to get his degree in 1904. All his associations however were with '02. and he is correctly listed as of this class in the latest Alumni Directory. He even completed all arrangements to attend our 60th Reunion in Wood-stock two years ago, and it was only ill health at the last moment that compelled him to miss that happy occasion. HermFarwell writes of him, "At heart he was always a 1902 man, and wished to be with us whenever possible. He was never demonstrative, but quiet and reserved. He was very substantial stuff."
Art Chivers, well known on the Faculty to many generations of Dartmouth men as a biologist, and to many more as the father of a famous family of Dartmouth skiers, is not too old to blossom out in a new role. He now ranks high as a Hanover Archivist. A long article in the Hanover Gazette records the fact that he has presented to the Dartmouth College Library, six volumes that summarize his work, started when as Town Selectman, he was appointed as Supervisor of Cemeteries in 1948. He soon realized that the records of funerals and burials in the town were far from complete, and in many cases inaccurate, so he set himself the task of producing a list that would be reliable and of use to anyone interested in the history of Hanover and the College. With this in view, in the course of years, he painstakingly deciphered every gravestone still extant, checking every discrepancy with other records, and has finally produced a work which he modestly says "may be of value," but which experts acclaim as a model of scientific accuracy.
