The Berkeley Daily Gazette of January 9, 1963 carried a large front page photograph of our classmate, George H. Hoyt, "Bit," and a four-column write-up entitled: "Historian-Appraiser Looks Back on 54 Years of City." George has written a book, one of the first, a complete history of Berkeley and Berkeley real estate, ever compiled. He arrived in Berkeley on March 3, 1909. He was a pioneer property appraiser and insurance broker, and is well known on the campus of the University of California for interesting and informative lectures. He is besieged by scholars writing Ph.D. and Masters' theses. Bit began a series of three-hour lecture seminars last year, a program he plans to continue. George is an honorary life director of the Berkeley Realty Board and has no intention of retiring until after 85. Congratulations, I hope you make it!
Dwight W. Hiestand wrote your secretary a very interesting letter from the Hotel Vermont, Mexico City. Dwight and a grandnephew, an A student from Chicago, who has future hopes of going to Dartmouth, used a fifteen-day vacation in December to make a circular tour of 5000 miles with him around Mexico. They went to everything from great pyramids to bull fights. They made it from New Orleans via plane to Yucatan, to Campeche, around the Gulf of Mexico, across the Pacific Ocean at Salina Cruz, then up Central Mexico to Mexico City. The grandnephew flew back to Chicago and Dwight plans to go southward again to sea level and warmth. He will return to Chicago in April.
Elwin and Elise Cutts of Milford, N. H., are enjoying the drier air in Phoenix, Ariz., this winter.
Louis C. Wood, since retiring from the U.S. Army Engineering Corps, has been spending some time in Waldoboro, Me., Los Angeles, Calif., and will be at 531 Washington Ave., Melbourne, Fla., until April 13.
On January 22 the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota made its annual pilgrimage to Anna Maria and a grand time was had at the luncheon there. The class of 1907 was represented by Bill and Edith Sanborn, Fred Baldwin, Bill and Jane Walker, Leon Sprague, Allen Brown, and Bob and Lura Kenyon. Among the nearby classes were Horace and Marion Kidger '03, Roger and Jane Brown '05, and George Allen '10.
Bill and Edith Sanborn have just returned from their trip to Florida, during which time they purchased a home in New Port Richey. They plan to move to their new residence after Edith retires from her State of Massachusetts job. Sounds good to me.
The Boston Alumni Association dinner on January 31 at the Harvard Club was a big success and classmates Kitching and Smart attended same. At their table were Channing Cox 'Ol and John Weston of Reading, Mass. President Dickey, Coach Blackman, and the other speakers were very interesting so Kitch informs your secretary who was unable to attend.
Birthdays of classmates in March are: Rocky Hazen on the 20th, Art Spear, the 23rd, and Al White, the 31st. We wish them a Happy Birthday!
To those of you who recall the summer baseball team days at York Beach, Me., in 1906-07, and '08 will be interested to know that Ked Richardson '08 writes: "Good friends, happy days to the dedicated Old Time York Beachers." I also heard from Sid Hazelton 'O9 who will recall those wonderful times.
Word has come through that Jane Walker, wife of Bill Walker, passed away on January 23 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Fla. Jane suffered a heart attack but there had been no previous warning. Funeral and burial services were held on Saturday, January 26 at St. Petersburg. Among those attending were Lura and Bob Kenyon, Duke Sanborn, Allen Brown and Roger and Jane Brown '05. Our most sincere sympathy goes to Bill Walker at this time for Jane will be greatly missed.
Our informal 56th reunion will take place on June 17, 18 and 19 and I am looking forward to seeing you all at that time. Thanks for your many letters. You are all very cooperative classmates.
