It is Valentine's Day again, and in a Leap Year too! I will expect to see a lot of membership applications for the Ball and Chain Marching and Chowder Society. I have a few extra pairs of track shoes for any of you running the Sadie Hawkins Day Race this year. (P.S. Psssst - Girls, don't worry, the shoes have soles of soft iron which should help some, also I will be glad to sell you powerful magnets for 342 rubles.) (Psssst — Guys, since your best interests are really closest to my heart . .. you can buy break-away track shoelaces to help you shed your heavy, attractive footwear for only 341 rubles.) This brings us to the subject of weddings.
The former Miss Deborah Wright and Gil Low were married last October 20, in Syracuse. As I recall, Debby and Gil met while both were spending the summer in Hanover some years back. Pretty romantic. The Lows are now living in New York where Gil is with Morgan Guaranty Trust. Tom Baseler finished up his Navy stint and now he and his new bride, the former Miss Karen Isaksen, are living in Rhode Island while Tom studies Oceanography. DaveSchmidt, one-time scourge of Zeta Psi, has settled down to a life of medicine at Harvard. Rather than going the long road alone, Dave cleverly won the heart of Miss Priscilla Morse, and the two were wed last November in Boston (see photo). Dave Gordon and Tony Wattleworth were on hand to see that Dave and the Mrs. got off on the right foot. Our favorite insurance man, BillRicker, took out a policy against celibacy in the person of Miss Sandra Johnson. LarsLenck helped guide Bill to the altar, and waved the happy couple off to their honeymoon in Bermuda. Another gala wedding took place way back in July. The principals were Gus Callender and Miss Judy Williams. I had heard rumors about this significant step in the life of young Angus, but wanted confirmation and got it in the form of a letter from Barry Mac Lean '60. It must have been a good party 'cuz Rocket Bob Moore was there.
Got some news of a couple of engagements too. It seems that Dick Beattie, First Lieutenant, USMC, and Miss Diana Lewis of Rye, N. Y., announced their engagement last October with plans for a December wedding. Maybe some kind soul will send along details of that one. Miss Theodora Fisher and Bill Hansen are engaged, have been since December, and will tie the twine when Bill can talk his leaders at Morgan Guaranty Trust into a little time off from the world of big finance. Navyman John Tyson and Miss Constance Camgros were reported to be planning a January wedding, so_l imagine that by now John and his sister ship are embarked on the sea of matrimony. (How's that for a beautiful, original image?? ... Yah, that's what I thought you'd say.) Anyhow, John is stationed aboard the "USS Guardian" out of Davisville, R. I. Hank Robbins and Miss Carol Saia are all set for a summer wedding. Hank is a big engineer of some sort for Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, Conn.
And some kind souls even sent your old dad Christmas cards. Sigh on my list of good guys for '64 are Mr. and Mrs. G. Theodore Perkins, currently with the Marines in San Clemente, Calif., and the second good guy award goes to Harris McKee, our noble president, and his wife, Mary. Harris is at Stanford getting even smarter on a National Science Foundation program in Mechanical Engineering. My last good guy is 2nd Lt.Pete Sterns, who found time out from his company commander duties at Ft. Jackson, S. C., to wing along a Christmas greeting.
Lt.(jg) Ernie Goff is presently serving aboard the "USS Dewey," deployed in the Mediterranean. Tiger Jim Olds is evidently planning a large "putsch" to overthrow the Northwest Dartmouth Alumni Association. Jim is operating out of his home fortress in lovely, fashionable suburban Excelsior, Minn. 2nd Lt. John Beckert is talking up a storm with the frauleins in Germany, where he is stationed with the Army (ours). ParkerBorg has returned from his tour with the Peace Corps in the Philippines, and has a Ford Foundation Grant for graduate study at Cornell.
And, "mes amis" (see, I can speak German too!), that's the lot for another funfilled column. For being so good and reading all the way through the news, you shall be rewarded with a funny - "What's purple and fights forest fires?" .. .'S easy, Smokey the Grape.
