Ex Lt. Joel B. Heathcote is in Europe before he dons his grey flannel suit and goes to work for Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati. His last fling at attempting to be a gay college lad brings home the changes of the last two years.
Paternity is no longer the uncommon; multiple degrees and impressive titles are now common. Jim Allison is now M.8.A., B.M.E. (and A.B. of course); his title: member of the technical staff, Guidance and Control Division, Aerospace Group, Hughes Aircraft in Culver City, Calif. Connie Persels is a Specialist in Computer Applications - Apollo Support Department of General Electric in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Jerry Greenfield, known as very unreliable on the freshman trip in '57 is now a Reliability Engineer for the Space and Information Systems Division of North American Aviation in Downey, California. John King,Dick Barr, and Hop Holmberg all graduated with Master of Hospital Administration degrees from Minnesota. King and wife Jane will remain at Fairview Hospital, Minneapolis, while Dick and Judy Barr will stay at Kansas U Medical Center in Kansas City. Judy and Hop are going to stay in school.
Dave and Susie Blake represent all of the ways taken by the class. Dave got his M.B.A. from Pittsburgh in the fall of '62 and became the young executive for Smith, Kline and French in Philadelphia. Now, done with the fling in the business world, Blake is going back for a Ph.D. in political science at ____. (Note: Osterhout knew where, but is fresh from the bars of Minneapolis at this writing and cannot remember.)
If this column laid too much stress on the changes it might seem unreal. For a touch of the familiar we can always recap the summer weddings. Hal Levenson is to wed Miss Elaine Barbara Moss of Boston University. John Wilkins is scheduled to marry Ann Basinger. John is an economic analyst with the U.S. Economics Corporation in New York. The Westbury (N.Y.) Times announced Miss Susan Steinberg's wedding to a "Harvard Man." Inspection reveals this Harvard man is Indian Larry Sills, a Harvard Business School student. Jim Meetian will wed Gael Dorsey of Des Moines in October; the wedding will take place in the Smith College Chapel after which the couple will return to Babenhausen, Germany for the duration of his employment with the Army.
Barnard has taken its toll with Gillette Anne Dauphinot becoming Mrs. Scott Piper in New York. Scott is attending the University of Miami Medical School. Dick Sax now with Chemical Bank New York Trust married Ellen Pomeranz in another New York wedding. Linda Twombly chose the government life by marrying Don Baker, now an engineer with the Public Health Service. John Zabriskie exchanged the vows with Madeline Jean Busch in June. John is doing graduate work at the University of Rochester.
Getting momentarily away from summer weddings we find Jerry Kaminsky graduating from Harvard Business School with high distinction, a scholastic performance not unlike those he turned in prior to June of 1961. Skip Kendall, securely wed for a year, becomes the third generation to participate in the management of Kendall Insurance Inc. of Rochester, N.H.; the firm was established in 1867. Frank Budetti is another Tuck-Thayer grad of this June. Frank will now work for Xerox; Franny will be missed as a secretary for Dartmouth College. RickTaft spent the summer away from Chicago Law School by serving in Washington as an Intern in the office of Vermont's Congressman Stafford.
The engagement and wedding list includes Dave Gordin as the groom of Marianne DeMona, and Paul Shaman the prospective of Miss Susan Slobin. Both '61s are in New York; Dave at Cornell Med and Paul working toward a doctorate in mathematical statistics at Columbia.
The gala '6l wedding of the summer in Minnesota was that of Mr. and Mrs. H. Dutton Foster (Caroline Davidson). Your reporters do not guarantee the following list as complete — it was quite a reception. Bill Hutton, half a year from a Michigan LL.B. led the entourage which included Mr. and Mrs. Tom Patterson, John Rattigan, Bill Beck, Heathcote, John and Jane King, and Holmberg. Missing was a good friend of Foster's, Dave. Birney. Incongruous as it may seem, Birney is now a private in the Army. Foster's comment: "can't you see Birney in the middle of the barracks reciting Hamlet!"
Frank Crouse, another recent Tuck-Thayer grad, is now paying back the NROTC pocket money he received in Hanover by carrying the title ensign. Bill Glenn got his M.B.A. with Frank. Pete Holbrook is probably the only member of the class not frustrated with life, his title: "Artist," his address: 9 Bleecker St. (city obvious). Larry Holden's occupation is unknown; he was discharged from the Navy recently after serving with Heathcote on the infamous Cuba Blockade. Their heroics were muted by the ships underneath them - L.S.D.s, possibly the most ungainly sitting ducks in the Navy. Fast talking Donny O'Neill may have found his niche as a salesman for the Specialty Coating Division of Paper Manufactures Co. in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
The long name section of the class has recently moved: John Schlachtenhaufen to be a trainee with Xerox following his receipt of Tuck-Thayer degrees; John Schnackenberg is with the Army's 116th INTO (whatever that is) Group in Washington, D.C. One more marriage and three more engagements and promise that will be all. JohnHagaman married Janet Harrington back in April when he was stationed at Fort Dix. Bill Bailey was scheduled to marry Alta Pride Ulrich in June. Georgette Georgiadis will corral Tony Oestreicher this fall. Both are working for McCann-Erickson Advertising in New York. Mary Ann Austin and Pete Freeman are also planning on a fall wedding.
Before leaving we see that Counsel for Respondents at the Case Clubs Annual Competition at Michigan Law was Chuck Dayton while Kathy rooted in the stands.
Well, we are out of breath for the time being, and besides the gin bottle has gone dry. While Osterhout returns to the streets to forage for more sustenance, legal, illegal, or otherwise, let us all rise and give Heathcote a round of applause for his toils at the news and humor. What we want to know, Heath, is: Will it sell soap? In any case, keep your letters coming to Joel at the above address; limes and tonic will also be appreciated - it is hot in Minneapolis.
Your temporary correspondents: Osterhout and Holmberg.
