As I was saying, there are plenty of weddings in the news. But, may I renew my usual plea for participation in your city's Dartmouth Club activities - a big part of which includes enrollment efforts in high schools which I'm sure some of you attended. There is a real need for more men in this phase of the College and we can make a major contribution by lending our efforts.
Joe Connors and Jim Page received degrees in the M.A.T. Program at Wesleyan last June, but I have no information where they plan to teach. If anyone does - let me know. In the Coast Guard now is MartyDavis; he received a master's degree in business administration from B. C. during the summer and went right into the service. Other degrees include Len Waldbaum's Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Law School and Phil Taylor's M.D. from Harvard Med School. Phil has begun his internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. I've learned that Dick Monson has received his second lieutenant's bars from the Air Force at Lackland and is now in the New York Air National Guard unit in Syracuse. Dick headed for Colgate after our graduation and received his master's degree before entering the service. And, Dean Edson, now Ensign Edson, was in the news as commanding officer of the Fifth Coast Guard Supply Unit. Wonder if his Tuck School training will enable him to show a profit even there?
Pete Rotch, after receiving his degree from the University of Chicago Law School, has been appointed project director of a study on disposal of junk autos by the New Hampshire Municipal. Association. I don't quite see the connection, but Pete became engaged this summer to Susan Rand, the daughter of Dartmouth's John Rand '38. She graduated from Conn College in 1965 and presently teaches biology at Sweet Briar College. On September 5 in Miami, Jeff Plancy and Linda Mandel were married. Evidently Jeff met Linda here in Philadelphia since she's a graduate of Temple's School of Oral Hygiene and Jeff's a senior at Penn Med. They're living in this city, so I'll find them and have more news in a later issue. Steve Lippman, who is living with his wife Sue in New York, always asks for news of Bob Kaplan and now I have some for him. Bob was married in Los Angeles in July. His bride, Jo-Kathleen Weiss, is a graduate of Berkeley and completed her first year at BU's Law School. Bob graduated from law school in California (Boalt Hall in Berkeley) and plans to practice in Los Angeles - which apparently means that his wife's BU days are over. Kathleen Kearney and Bob Finney set up residence in Metuchen after their June wedding. Bob's with New Jersey Bell Telephone; his wife teaches in Warren Township, N.J. Cherill Story Soule was another June bride - her groom: Fred Doane. I don't know what Fred does when there isn't snow on the ground, but during the winter, he's a ski instructor in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Just for variety, here are a few engagements: Pete Israelson and Elizabeth Landis are to be married in New York. Pete received his M.A. last year and was a Reynolds scholar in English language and literature at Oxford. His fiancee is a Vassar alumna. Jack Phelan and Rebecca Louise Carlson are also engaged. Jack is now attending BU Law School. A December wedding is planned for Bill Bates and Ann Sample. Bater is with Connecticut General; Ann is in her senior year at Smith.
Andy Allen and Diane Froud were wed in August in Norwalk with Bill Lawliss looking on. Diane graduated from Bucknell and teaches in Pelham, N.Y. Andy received an M.B.A. from Virginia and is with an ad agency in New York. By the time this issue hits the newsstands, Doug Lien and Camilla Kidder Riggs will have married. I think Doug has received his master's degree from Colorado State, but I have no further news on his plans. Another June bride was Nora Kanton, who married Len Shukovsky in New York. She's a senior at NYU; Len is in his final year at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Mike O'Brien wed Barbara Haynes last month. After leaving the college,, he graduated from Newark State and is a graduate assistant in physical oceanography at Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William and Mary. Gordon Andrews and Deborah Devere were married in July. Gordy was in the Navy for a couple of years, but I believe that he's now out of the service, and lost somewhere on the East Coast. If anyone finds him point him in this direction and tell him to write. (At last report, he was with McGraw-Hill Publishing Co.) Buddy Bruggeman, who manages to make this column once a year, was married in Falmouth to Ann Margaret Kayajan, a Simmons alumna. Buddy is at Harvard Med. Mary Lou Jennette and John Lehigh were married over the summer also. He's at MIT studying architecture while being associated with a Boston architectural firm. Mary Lou teaches school.
I'll save the rest of the wedding news for next month - let me know if anyone is still single and intends to remain that way!!
